Annoying HDD Problem

So I have a 500gb hdd.
It was connected as a backup, which got formatted some how.
Now I want to partition it.

I need like 3 partitions.
I tried Norton Partition Magic and gparted.

Both didn't work. I can't even boot with it now. Like have it connected and boot on my main XP. But when I unplug the 500gb, it boots fine on my XP hdd.

Any tips?

Thanks

Did set the drive's jumper correctly? You carried this over from the other thread. GParted works quite well if you see a good burn. You have to bring the menu for drives on the right side of the explorer since it will show the primary by default. That will be the HDa1 showing the nTFS primary for XP there.

IF you set it correctly to the slave position on the middle connector and the 500gb isn't seen on the post screen try the cable select postiion. Once you see it at post time go into the Disk Management tool to see if Windows detects the drive there and the type of partition already on it?

Alright.
So check the connectors?

How would I just completely format the whole hdd.

Cause it got formatted due to a virus, and now its storing a few files.

would that work?

Thanks

Besides the position on the cable end=master, middle=slave you now have to decide whether or not you plan to keep the files currently on the drive if they were stored there following a reformat to wipe a virus. The "fast" and I mean fast way to reformat depending on whether you have XP or Vista running would be to delete the existing one or more partitions and create a new.

If no OS is planned like Windows you would then slave it to an OSed host drive(XP or Vista) and use the Disk Management tool to see the new partition get a full format. One thing MS did was smarten up a little by adding an optional set of drive tools on the install disk. You can see boot problems fixed automatically as well as choose the format option there. If the current partition on the drive is already NTFS you can delete any others and expand it to the full capacity of the drive with GParted easy enough.

Once at the main gui and any other partitions are gone you simply click on the resize button and then on the slider bar to drag that to the end of the drive. The small arrows keys for gradually increasing or decreasing drive space before or after a partition are best for inserting a space between more then one or moving a partition. Those take a bit longer. Once you stretch out to the end of the drive you click the apply button and watch for a minute or so. If the drive's jumper is set correctly for the position on the cable you will see all of this go fast since the drive will seen at post.

I set the 500gb hdd to the purple sata ports and then tried the other sata port in the same section as my xp one.

I went to 'My Computer' and only saw one hdd connected.

Thanks

Are you set for sata master #1, #2 and so forth or set to sata array in the bios? If you have that set to array there two drives are seen as one. With the two satas here each is seen as a sata master with the XP Pro on the 1st primary and the storage on the 1st slave there. The secondary could be used for an array if I ever decide on adding two more satas to see 6 HDs? The manual for the board will show how to add a second sata as a stand alone and not part of an array there.
