Yup, i think there's already been a thread about this but i dont know..

So yea performance wise which would be better a 9600GT or the 8800GT (256MB version)?

As long as you don't play on ridiculously huge resolutions (1900*1200 or bigger) I think they would perform about the same, but the 8800GT 256mb will still have the upperhand. On lower resolutions you will notice the difference between the 8800GT 256mb version and 9600GT... The 8800GT 256mb will still beat the 9600GT, but why not spend 20 dollars for a pretty big performance difference?

The 8800GT beats the 8800GS, and the 9600GT should be about the same performance as the 8800GS (only the one beats the other were the other loses to the other again on a different place, they're good in different things).

I can only play at max of 1024x768 because of my monitor and I usually dont play anything above that, dont ask why.. alright coolio so its the XFX 8800GT then! :D

What about the 9600 GT 512mb VS. 8800 GT 512mb?

I can find a 9600 GT 512mb for $140, while the cheapest 8800 GT near my city is $200. Should I save the 60 and get the 9600 GT?

Hands down the 8800GT 512mb will beat the 9600GT easy. And even in SLI the 8800GT beats it with ease.

Despite the performance boost when you put a second 9600GT in your open slot it will not beat the 8800GT in SLI seeing the 8800GT drivers are becoming greater and greater every day (and the sheer grunt it has). But still, an average of 82% performance boost when you put 9600GT's in SLI compared to a single one is quite great. Shows how good the new high-ends might be.

Your 8800GT may need the BIOS upgrade 'Oregon'. Some of the cards with the stock coolers have the fan set at a ridiculous value and they only spin up a bit, however not all cards have it. The new BIOS increases the fan speed.

yeah my fan is at 60% now, (cant hear it over my case fans, which are old and loud) and its idling at 35C and never goes above 55C

It is... 9600GT is a mid-range card... But it is the top of the midrange cards (however, do watch that 8800GS 768mb version).

Yeah, I have my fan speed locked at 29%. I like it nice and quiet and I think temps are fine (they are, aren't they?).

Ok, I just bought myself the eVGA 9600 GT and it's great. So far it's idling at 45 degrees Celsius and damn, when underload... the performance is amazing for a $150 card.
