Sorry to bore the board (?) but I too have recently had a problem connecting to the internet.
My internet provider is B.T. and they supplied me with a wireless hub although I connected this to my PC via an ethernet cable, plugged into the correct socket at the rear of the PC. My son's PC pickes up the internet via wireless and he has no problems, nor had I for the last 4 months since I installed this.
A couple of days ago my machine started running slowly and eventually crashed. When I tried re-starting I got the dreaded blue screen of death. To cut a long story short I eventually got the thing running again by using windows repair (XP Home) but now I cannot connect to the internet.
The BT Hub says it cannot detect an ethernet connection but when I do a systems check on the ethernet, it states that is running and operating properly. I have spent hours on this problem, reinstalling drivers etc etc but am no further forward.
Any ideas ?, anyone ? please ?
