I am going to purchase a new 300gb hard drive for my computer, and i would like to learn how to use linux. Is it possible to partition the hd so that part can be used for windows, and the other part for linux?

Also, what are the benefits of using linux?

And what kind of learning curb can i expect?

yes, you will be given the option at setup - install linux first as this can make life easier when it comes to installing windows.

mulitple, but you tell us what you're hope to get out of it

And what kind of learning curb can i expect?
depending on experience... steep

Yes you can partition to use linux and Windows. Linux is seen by some as a more powerful, stable and secure OS, although mostly it is personal preference as to whether or not you like Linux's style. I would suggest getting a book or using an online guide to linux, as there are many different things in Linux than Windows. It will take a little time to get used to it and understand the directories and whatnot.

probably more of a the technical competency of user being the deciding factor

You should also get one of those free OS's that manage your use of the Opersating systems. It loads up before both windows and linux and asks you which you wanna use and stuff like that. I can't remeber the name...one sec...
