Another new build...

Hello everyone. I'm in the process of finalizing my parts list for my long awaited upgrade and was hoping to get some last minute suggestions. Nothing super special here. I'd be doing some graphic art with it and some gaming, but not cutting edge. Probably something like bioshock for example. Also, since my old comp sounds like a wind tunnel, I was looking to make this one nice and quiet.

gigabyte p45 series mobo
core2 duo 2.8
cpu cooler (necessary? I know it'll be quieter and give the possibility of OC.
4gb corsair pc6400
WD caviar green hdd (x2 in raid 1 possibly)
geforce 8600gt
corsair 400w psu (Will this be enough? It's 30A on the +12 and the price is hard to pass up.)
Finally, everything goes in an Antec 300.

Thanks everyone.

You need a CPU cooler. They are essential and not optional, unless you want a fried CPU.
Those parts look good, but up the psu to 500w or so, and the 8600gt really won't be able to play many games... if you must get a midrange card go for the 9600gt, preferably the 9800gt.

Bodaggit- I'm trying to keep it under $700.

Linkin- Obviously I need some kind of cpu cooler. My question was if I should go with the cool and quiet noctua or stay with the stock one that comes with the chip and save the money. Also, I just now found these reviews on newegg for the 8600gt.

Well, I bought this card for a small upgrade about a year ago, for a completely stock E-machines, and it ran perfectly on a 300 Watt PSU, ran Bioshock full graphics, and had no problems with TF2. Very Well built, will take a heavy usage load no problem.

Easy to install, works flawlessly with a 300W stock power supply (as the specifications state), is extremely quiet even under load, and provides a dramatic improvement over integrated (onboad) graphics.

It makes me wonder if I need anything better than the card or the 400w psu. Oh, I forgot to mention.. It'll have a dvd burner too.

thanks for the replies.

If you are worried about power just go for the ATI 4670 or the 9800 gt green . Anything lower and you will regret it later.

So if I go with the 9600gt low power, will this set up be good? Or should I have more power?

ps. Also, does anyone have an opinion on the noctua cpu cooler? Is it worth the $~50 to have it a couple degrees cooler and a couple dB quieter?

My Noctua cooler is superb.

Most of the Rifle style cooler will yield similar results, and you can always buy quiet fans.

Thanks Bodaggit.
What do you think about the psu. I try to get an estimate from those power calculators like this one here and I'm always under budget no matter what I add on. On the other hand, if I use the one from newegg, which is very stripped down, I barely squeak by with 400w. Should I go with corsair's 450vx or 550vx instead? (BTW, they are both the same price after rebate if bought today from newegg if anyone is interested)

Okay, 1 more question to anyone out there and then I have to pull the trigger on this deal.

I think I may just go with the corsair 550 since it's only $30 more than the 400 right now.

So the question is, if I'm not limited by power and don't need the 9600gt green, what other model/brand vid card would be good as well as quiet? And hopefully around $75.

Anyone hear anything about this card?
