another OC'ing question....

Well, i have a sempron 2300+, and i want to know how far i can OC it. I tested my ram and it can be stable about 215Mhz. So far i have my Cpu Oc'ed to 175 frequency(1.66Ghz). The DRam ratio is at 1:1, so my memory is at 175.

My question is, how far can i safely Oc my Cpu without increasing the core volt. Im not worried about temps because i have a heatsink thats rated for a 3800+. Also, would increasing the frequency affect my Pci/Agp devices? Im not sure if i have a Pci/Agp lockers or how to turn them on/off.

Its different on every system. The only way to find your max OC is to try it yourself.

Some motherboard have PCI and AGP locks, but alot dont. if they dont, then when you overclock those buses are also getting higher. Thats a main cause in the limit to your oc, a AGP based video card that crashed due to a high AGP bus speed. If you have them, they would be located in the BIOS.
 
ok, thanks for the reply. So i am taking it that there would be a option to enable the locks in the bios? Also, would increasing the frequency too much on my Processor damage it? Could i damage my video card also?
 
If you raise the FSB too high, then your computer will either crash or not boot, it wouldnt damage it. You just go into CMOS and clear it.

But if you raise the voltages too high, then that could cause some damage. Also if the processor overheats, that can also damage it.
 
ok thanks. I cant increase the voltage even if i wanted to so im not going to worry about that. Ill post when i find the max frequency.
EDIT: Is there a program to benchmark my CPU and ram?
EDIT: i think i do have and PCI and Agp Locker because when i OC my cpu the PCI stays at 33.33Mhz and the AGP stays at266.64 no matter how much i increase the Cpu Frequency

Alrihgt i found the limit. I can OC my Cpu to 1.924Ghz and anything after that the computer locks up. I set the Ratio to 5:4 but it still locks up at 1.928ghz. The fastest i can set my Cpu speed in the bios is 1.89Ghz, and if i wanted to OC it more i would have to OC it using SuperStep, but i am fine with 1.89Ghz. Thanks for the help.

Also will Oc my Cpu Shorten its life too much? I am planning on upgrading in a year, but i want this to last at least 2 years just in case something comes up. Thanks again

Provided that you don't blow it up or overheat it, OCing can actually increase lifetime in certain situations. But if you OC correctly, it won't decrease it.
 
The temps stay at 35C idle and and 40C max. I know i can get the temps down with Artic Silver 5, the Heatsink is cold to the touch, Right now im just using generic thermal pad. Thanks for the help.
 
35C is fine, IMO anything over 50C idle is when you should look at a better cooling solution.

I was thinking back to the article that I read ( can't find it, of course :rolleyes: ) and I believe that it was just saying that OCed processors can last longer than stock ones, but it doesn't actually increase the life.

Artic Silver 5 paste would it realy lower temps???????

Yes I know that, cheers but I just put some paste which I had here, so you pay for what you get Y/N, and it would lower temps a bit????
 
Yuep, generic thermal paste is alright but artic silver 5 works alot better then genericc stuff. it lowered my temps from 35 down to 20, but these results arent typical. They would on average lower it by 5 C
 
yea motoxor dude probably had other stuff on very sloppy and probably put artic silver on very neatly, but its great thermal paste.
 
lol i dont really care too much about response times and such, im happy with what i have now, and if i ever want to OC more, ill read into it more. Thanks anyways though:)
