another upgrade thread

Hi, I'm thinking of upgrading my aging system. Budget of around £300 (~$450). Will be general purpose PC, but will also need to be decent at number crunching for MATLAB/Maple and such. Occasional, fairly casual gaming.

Current specs:

Mobo: ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe
CPU: Athlon 64 3500+ (Sckt 939)
RAM: 2x512MB PC3700
GPU: Nvidia Geforce 6600GT
PSU: 480W

Not really interested in upgrading the mobo, i reckon i can stretch another few years on this upgrade, then get a completely new system on whatever the standard is then.

CPU, RAM, and GPU are what I'm looking at upgrading. Dual core CPU preferably. Any advantage in getting an Opteron over and X2 for example?
Will probably go for 2x2GB RAM; any good brands? I don't remember anymore. Does my motherboard accept anything better than DDR2?

As far as GPU goes, I don't need anything particularly high end at all. Just something fairly solid. Are HDMI connections fairly standard nowadays? Would be nice to have one, but not a big deal if not.

As an afterthought, is the PSU going to be sufficient to handle the upgrade?

Any help/suggestions would be welcome.

Well I looked up the system in all you could prob do a nice upgrade for about 150 to ur system, for you can drop 250 and buy a system that is 3 times as strong.

258 dollars for a new system. You can go even cheaper, this is a system that will probably last you 2 to 3 more years. But you will see a huge difference in the performance.

The gpu i picked out will be such a difference for you, it destroys the 6600gt, but it is now considered a low-end card now, so thats why you can get them so cheap :D


What is ur psu brand?

And you should probably get a new hard driveto go along with the system.. and idk wat kinda connections u use, sata or ide?

HDMI are common, almost every video card has one..even the really low end cards do..

I guess it wouldn't be that much more expensive for a new system. Any reason for picking that particular motherboard?

The setup you outline costs ~£270 from british stores. What do you think about these bundle deals at a similar cost (getting a second stick of RAM too as well as the GPU you listed)?

Might look at getting a 1TB SATA drive eventually, but it's a secondary concern at the moment.

PSU is a Thermaltake Purepower btw.

I would go for that set up!, the 555 is quite a bit better than the 240, i would go for that, but just get more ram for your system.
 
Whatever happens, don't get an opteron. They're for servers. Everything else would be a bottleneck to your system :P

Upgrade the RAM, in particular
