another urgent computer problem

My friend's computer ceased to operate recently. Every time it boots it gives the message about not being able to find ntokrnl, and i'm not sure how to configure the harddrives to fix this. Also he has lost the ability to boot from his cdrom drive. I have tried several cdrom drives, several windows cds (longhorn beta1 and his winxp home). An ide harddrive still seems to be able to boot, though thats not we wanted to do. Could anyone give me some advise?
he asked me to help him fix it for him, and even though i told him i dont know what to do he still expects me to fix it :confused: :eek:

Stats on the machine:
AMD X2 4400+
A-Bit AN8-SLI MOBO
1GB x2 PC3200 XMS Corsair RAM
BFG Geforce 6800GT Ultra PCI-E
Maxtor 250GB SATA
80GB SATA
600W PSU
 
If the message is NTLDR then that would be either a direct OS problem or a problem with the MBR of the OS. Easiest way to remedy this would be to just do a repair install of XP. If it's not booting from the CD-ROM make sure you got the boot order right in the BIOS and then if it's still not working try a different drive/cable.
 
Thats just the problem though, I normally would do that but the Motherboard is not listening to whatever boot order I try. It does try to boot from the CDROM drive, but it never works. I have tried different drives, and am pretty sure the cable works.

I think all you need to do is to reformat the whole pc , if still got problem then you need to send that back to the service center as we are not professional and we can also seek their advise on this matter, then we will learn something new for the day.

Have you tried resetting the BIOS?
