Anti-spy/malware

I assume there's two kinds of anti-notwantedware, the "resident protection" or whatever it's called that blocks the crap and the "cleaner" kind, which practically just searches the computer for some of the crap that's not supposed to be there. And I know that many anti-youknowwhat programs combine both, right?

Anyways, I want best possible *free* protection. I've heard that running multiple "resident shields" can cause conflicts just like running multiple firewalls and so on, but having several scanners should not be a problem...I think.

Now I want all you experts to suggest me the best *free* "resident protection" and several good *free* "scanners" that I could/should use... following me?

Oh and is the "resident protection" that comes with antispymaladware packages basically some kind of HIPS? If so, will running one with my firewall's HIPS cause conflicts? And it this is the case, will my firewall's HIPS suffice for real-time protection againist unwantedware?

OK thanks, so now that I have Avira Antivir installed, I don't need to worry about anything else...? Would Spybot S&D, Spyware Blaster or anything like that offer any extra protection?

Yes, Spybot Search and Destroy's TeaTimer prevents unknown application from adding keys into the registry and SpywareBlaster helps prevent bad cookies and browser hijacks.
