..Automatically turns-off... I have McAfee and I use the firewall from Windows, and sometimes Ill fidn that my Anti-Virus protection is turned off and my computer is nto protected from anything. and other times ill find my firewall is completely off. Is this something I should be worryin about? I scan my comp everyday and it never shows anything going on.

thanks for any input. Peace.

McAFee is one program to dump there. That just happens to one of the programs on the bottom of the list. I would dump McAFee in a moment's notice if problems were seen. Having a firewall is simply additional protection added to the system. Most of the time the Windows firewall is off here. But that is mainly due to having others programs running.

As an alternative AVG offers far better protection by alerting you if something gets on the system. That will run with or without the Win firewall turned on. The AVG 7.5 free antivirus and AVG Anti-Spyware Free programs are available for download at http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5#avg-anti-spyware-free

There are a few other freeware or free versions of programs that will work far beeter then McAFee. Spybot Search & Destroy, AdAware SE Personal, Ewido is now owned by AVG, and other freewares and sharewares are found at http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html

ok, thanks man. Would it be beter to buy the full version of AVG rather than just the free one? Cuz wouldnt the free one not have as muhc protection as the paid one?

Why you don't try Avast! home edition ?, it free and it can find more viruses than AVG or norton

I had Avast before. but it kept messing up. and a friend of mine said thta McAfee was dope, so i bought it. lol.

To date I still haven't gone with the AVG Professional retail version and have never had to. The free version has caught more then viruses attached to incoming email. It will often catch things being put on your drive by web sites when you run across them for the first time.

save yourself the hassle for your firewall and spend 50 bucks and get a decent router that supports NAT w/ a firewall. that will stop a lot of attacks

It depends on how you are connecting. A router wouldn't be much good on a 56K dialup modem now would it. If you are a dsl router the ISP will usually have a firewall program already available. After hearing one complaint about Jetico two others might see better results like Comodo and SyGate.

Firewalls may or may not be included with the service plan when using a dsl service. The ISP often simply provides the needed software for the router only while another service will provide a firewall program. You are never safe simply by the type of connection but the protection you already have inplace. With a NIK or Lan card for one system only you wouldn't even use a router. A router primarily is used on a shared connection.

ok thanks...

My router I got with my Internet Service(DSL). My parents already have the AVG anti-virus(free one) and say its really good...... But then again, my parents think that a CD drive doubles as a cup holder, so Im not realyl sure of beleiving them...

neways Ill try that out. Thanks for all the input everyone.

I used Avast!, Antivir, AVG -FREE, and Norton.- SUBSCRIB.

Norton, I didn't feel like paying every year and didn't need that much security it offered for its bloatware. I just basically use internet, email, music, online games, limewire, yahoo!music, etc. So I just need basic protection.

AVG- I think its the oldest and less resource user but has the worst detections(not saying its bad) of the other 2 freewares.

AntiVir- The best of the freeware virus detections and scanning speed of the 3. It also has a pop-up ad everytime you turn you start your computer.

AVAST!- My pick, for it having the most features- autoupdate without popup but by speech of sound, nice interface, email scan etc.

Second best detection of the 3. BUT it is the longest scanning speed of the 3, for me a thorough scan would take 2.5 hrs for 25GB of used Hard disk.
I think that is the only problem-->long scanning.
But I wouldn't care, I'd run games at the same time or w/e while it scans.

For firewall I use Windows Firewall, and Linksys WRT300-N - SPI Firewall

I could disagree on AVG not having some good detection after having seen it spot various trojans and worms since I first came it and started using it regularly some years back. Even when unchecked in the msconfig utitilty so as not to startup along with Windows it flashed an alarm one day when a trojan was put on the drive fast by an unfamiliar web site. But AVG along with any other can just as easily miss a lot at times.

The Trend Micro PC-cillin 30day tryout was given a test with it's own firewall, built-in spam detector, antivirus, and antispyware utlities piled together. It blocked several site from being reached with secuirty settings raised, reported a pile of spam after detection with that option, found some trojans missed by "everything else" which can happen easily. The main drawbacks were the demand on the system and the interference with the ability to connect online. It was removed. It's has 50/50 rating here.

The one important thing to keep in mind is the lack of any of them to catch 100% of everything that floats around on the internet. Sometimes a special removal tool for one thing only has to be used. Ewido catches things that AdAware misses and AdAware gets the ones Ewido missed. Spybot S&D, AVG, or something else like Webroot's Spy Sweeper will find even more. It's like the Eveready energinizer bunny there where they just keep coming and going and... :P

kaspersky is my personal fravoit. unlike norton or other it dont takes alot of ram while scanning and even if you want to erase it from comp it wouldn't leave anything behind like norton did.

Trend Micro's PC-cillin was given a good run where it has anti- virus, spyware, phishing, and a personal firewall all rolled into one. It automatically took charge and unistalled AVG and placed the icon in the exact same spot on the desktop. But it found a few trojans that nothing did and actually blocked access to certain "questionable" web sites when the security settings were raised.

The firewall prompted on just everything imaginable. But like Norton it grabbed to many resources and conflicted with dsl here. I had to keep rebooting the system after the continued bump from the internet. The trial version works great for a quick cleaning but the drawbacks are as large as the benifits. I give it the 50/50 rating there.
