AntiVirus program, good one.

Okay, I am sick of norton. I just tried to put a copy from an old comp. onto new one, and installation wont even begin. Also, it just tells me what viruses are coming in/on my comp, instead of removing them. I've got AdAware SE for spyware, but any FREE antivirus programs recommended? I'm sorry if there are already 100 threads like this, but I didn't feel like getting yelled at for digging up threads:rolleyes:. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thx guys.

How about one thats free, with a firewall? like, an internet security. Looked back, couldn't find anyone that labaled as firewall at all. Anyone know a good one? I got AVG + Adaware right now, w/ windows firewall.

Hmmm

I know that Sygate Personal Firewall is for free. As well as that, a very good free firewall is Kerio Personal Firewall. Both do the job very well. Now as to teh antivirus, AVG is good. As an alternative I would have a look at Avast! (www.avast.com) because that's what I use and think works great compared to the others that I have used.

JAN :D

while kinda on the subject, can a program like avast be used in conjunction with norton? i hate norton, but my mom wont let me delete it (i dont have my own computer yet...) so i was wondering if i could dl avast and use that while norton is still on my computer?

Norton is way better than any free antivirus program! Why do you hate norton? Are you having some sort of problem? And no you cannot use 2 antiviruses they will conflict!

I bought the downloadable norton from newegg, got new HDD/OS, transfered the installer, and all, wont let me run it on "two computers".

Contact norton they might be able to help you resolve that issue, you might have to purchase a key code for the second computer at a discount price!

If you have norton on one computer and you just need an antivirus for the second one avg and avast are pretty good, I use to have avast and it saved me from a few viruses but then my computer started acting funny and I bought norton2005 and it found a virus that avast missed so in a sence you get what you payed for...just my o2! After doing my homework though if I was going to purchase another antivirus it would be nod32!

Hey cell4me let's face some facts here shall we, while Symantecs Norton may work like a charm for you there are indeed alternatives who easily challenges it when things like detection rates and system resource hogging is taken into the picture. Then you add the fact that Norton costs money and you'll understand why many people tend to search for other free alternatives which will provide just as good protection while being easier on your system.

And no you cannot use 2 antiviruses they will conflict!

Well technically you can but it isn't a very good idea.

Funny I don't think anyone will answer over at the Nortons... :P

Try Symantec. :)

I was not trying to be rude! Excuse me if thats the way it sounded, but he already has norton and wants to switch to a free antivirus??? I just dont see the point, you cannot honestly tell me that avg or avast is better than norton can you? And I was just pointing out the fact that norton did find a virus that avast missed but for a free antivirus I think avast rocks, like I said it did save my computer a few times!

I didn't say that, but equally good (esp seeing it's free).

And I was just pointing out the fact that norton did find a virus that avast missed but for a free antivirus I think avast rocks, like I said it did save my computer a few times!

Ok, so that one occasion on your particular system makes you think Norton don't miss stuff? :)

No but I would bet the farm that norton has a higher detection rate! But there is no one best antivirus they all miss something! Thats why updating and doing an online scan with another antivirus is always a good idea in my opinion!

Well i guess i shouldnt judge Symantec to hard as I haven't really used/evaluated their products for a couple of years now, I in fact don't use any AV at all.

wait, so back to original question, or i forget if it really was the original question, dont wanna scroll up. I could have in the time I spent typing that and this though. Anyway, is there another good, free, effective AV/firewall besides norton? any sugesstions for best firewall? I checked out that sticky, there were a couple.

I use to use sygate have heard good reviews about that one, word of caution though I seen on another sight something about a new program that can crack zonealarm! I dont know how much truth is involed in this claim but just something to think about!
