Whats the best free anti virus and firewall
and a anti virus that has frequent updates and a virus scan option

Grisoft's free for home use version of AVG is one that sees regular updates and even notifies you when a new build is available for immediate download and installation. Commodo and the Jetico personal firewall are the two best rated free firewall programs while the rather new Spyware Terminator offers a mild form of firewall in that antiadware/spyware freeware.

The word on the free version of Zone Alarm is never good since that only offers one of the retail version's full features. Along with AVG, Commodo or Jetico, and Spyware Terminator, another ffreeware seeing regular updates is Lavasoft's Ad-Aware 2007.

will having more than 1 virus protection program work better or just does the same thing as 1 virus protection program

Most Av units will not be compatible with the next, 2 reasons, most have a Resident monitoring, which can conflict with one another, also they can constantly detect each other as malware, because of the code an AV is built on, is based off Virus code, per detection.

So keep only one.

In most cases one won't even allow another one to be installed. The installer itself will point out the need to remove one before it can proceeed any further. When going to try the shareware version of Trend Micro's PC-cillin AVG had to be removed just to try that one out. They are designed that way to detect anything that gets in their way.

The free version of AVG includes an effective email scanner as well as a residential shield. On one occasion where AVG was totally disabled in the services as well as startup group found in the msconfig utility it suddenly sprang to life when a trojan was instantly copied to the drive upon reaching a odd site during a web search. AVG pointed out just where it was for manual removal.
