Torrents are not illegal. Bittorrent is a protocol that is legit. Many companies, specially the open source community, use torrents to distribute large files and reduce network load. I know that there are many torrent sites that offer content that might not be 100 % legit, but to say that an entire protocol is illegal seems to be a little excessive.
