any program to checkthe hdd for errors?

I have concerns about my hdd beeing working correctly, so i was wondering if there is a program to check that? (windows sometimes having weird errors, and WoW freezes sometimes)
I know you can 'check' a hdd with windows... but i mean something that is ran before windows boots. preferably soemthing from WesternDigital self (since thats the brand of my hdd) because if something is wrong with it, I want to send it back for a replacement. It's always been running very hot (had a fan blowing on top of it, and a heatpipe cooler on it, still it was 50-55*C all the time, thats why I think something might be wrong with it, and thats the cause for my errors (since I reinstalled windows because of those errors, and they didnt go away)
 
For Western Digital go here and download the Data Lifeguard for DOS diagnostics. You can either get a floppy image or a CD image. Burn the image to a disk, then boot from the disk and run both Short and Long tests.

google internet search for the ultimate boot disk, it will have tons of diagnostics you can run on your HD from that boot disk. It should be a simple ISO download, burn, boot from it, and run the tests.

I would make sure you have all data currently backed up though if you suspect hard disk failure.
 
Actually, all you have to do is run chkdsk /r from the recovery console and use speedfan in Windows to check the SMART status.

If your programs are freezing, check your PSU and temps before you start blowing money on harddrives.
 
ok, ran the WD program (short and long check) none did find anything... so, now i have no idea whats causing the problem :x

I've had WoW going to windows with critical errors already.. and now I just installed Tribes Vengeance, Played it for an hour or so, and then it crashed too (critical error)

is the message it gave... yea, really helpfull >.< anyone any idea what the problem might be? (because appearantly its not the hdd)


hmm.. started it again, and the pc crashed after another hour or so.. so it seems like Tribes Vengeance has the same issue as WoW on this pc.
funny tough, because I played Crysis and Silent hunter 4 for example without a problem so far... so i gues its gotta be software then?

chkdsk /r only scans for file system errors not hardware errors. Though since the hardware tests came back passing, we can assume more likely it is the file system that is the issue, or perhaps bad memory.

Describe actually how it is crashing. Do you get any error messages?
 
well... sometimes it jsut freezes up... nothing goes anymore (not even the mouse moves) and sometimes WoW jsut crashes to the desktop, whining about it had a critical error. I jsut installed windows again, because of this problem. did a format and all, but seems that didnt work.

never OC'd anything in this pc either
 
run memtestx86 google it, or download the ultimate boot disk mem test should be on there. Test your RAM.
 
already did, turned out to be working (no errors)


i went poking in the bios a few minutes ago, and disabled some options. one of them was, well, it had to do with overclocking the grafic'scards using the pci-e bus or so. (well, disabled it) and some otehr stuff.. will look tomorrow weither it makes a difference.



the funny thing is tough.. sometimes it runs for hours without a problem, and about an hour ago, it crashed wow (with a critical error) twice within 10 minutes.

I know. I've ran memtest86, prime95, the windows chkdsk and that WD program. all cam out empty.

I know my motherboard doesn oficially support quad core cpu's, But i havnt read about anyone having problems with running it (except that you cant overclock it)

the chipset does support the q6600 (nvidia 590SLI) and I've read about quite some people using it.. not to mention it does show up as 4 cpu in the performance tab in windows, with 4 different cpu loads. ofcourse.. I cant be certain on anything atm, I mean Something is obviously not right, I just dont know what :(
