Any simple OSs that are compatible with most software?

I would like to know if their are any OSs that basically just has network & is compatible with most software/programs?
I want one that is down the the bone,no extra bs
 
Depends on what programs you use, but it sounds to me like you want a minimalist Linux OS. I use crunchbang Linux and I love it. Other suggestions include any Linux OS that has a net install. It will only install the needed packages for the OS to run, and then you can add any you want afterwards. Tiny Core Linux is also a option.
 
I been trying to figure out if I can dual boot,still don't know.Will probably just put it on a separate HDD.
I was wanting to play console emulators,but most are windows.So I guess ill mostly use it for surfing & movies.Want to use divx,the plugin for it is html 5.Doesn't work on firefox,but seems like it still works.Cause the movies still play.
I don't mean to hate on windows.Its just all I have used,never tried a different OS company.Soon as I heard about linux & got curious,they got a security breach.

If you want OS for THE MOST BASIC THINGS and which is ALSO compatible with MOST software,I definetely recommend you Microsoft Windows XP Starter edition computer operating system.
That is the one I put on my mom's laptop because she uses her laptop for pictures,videos and internet only.

A lot more people use linux then you might think. There is also a lot of things that run linux without you even realizing it. Though, i will agree, most of the userbase is in servers.


As far as security, the website got hacked and that has nothing to do with individual OS's. There is no one version of linux. There's thousands. The one thing they all have in common is the Linux Kernel. Linux Operating systems are one of the most securest out there, which is again why it is so often used for servers.
