http://www.ubuntu.com/,

I have no experience with this software, but i would recommend Windows 7 RC, it is still out for download, then you could buy it later.

Maybe upgrade processor to Core 3, something,

What kind of things do you use your computer for, Games, work???

Oh I'm all around the globe on what I do on my computer. And I really don't think that Windows 7 would be good for that computer with that specs. What do you think about xubuntu 9.04 - using it as a "file server"?

File server with what OS?

I'm turning a simiilar old PC into a Samba Server with Ubuntu O/S. It's basically a file server - but Samba Servers interface well with Microsoft products - so the Desktop will work well with it.

I'm finding it's more of a project than I had initially thought - mainly b/c Ubuntu isn't plug and play like all the Microsoft O/S I have used in the past. I've got my Server O/S installed - and slowly reading up on setting up the Network card to connect to my Microsoft Desktop / network security options / etc.

If you like to learn new things - it's worthwhile endeavor. I'll give a full report when I have things all up and running. :P
