Anyone have a Raspberry Pi?

So I have been looking at getting a raspberry pi online for about $40 to $50. For me it more just to play with but I was curious what you guys are all doing with them? I am looking at either a raspberry pi that I would run a altered version debian that was optimized to run on those or maybe spend a little more and get a more powerful one that would run android.
 
I just got mine a few days ago (took 5 months to get, ridiculous). The version of Debian that you can download off the Raspberry Pi website is horrible, the thing is dog slow with that version and doesn't do a very good job of running any video or audio, mostly optimized for school kids to write Python programs in order for them to learn programming.

I downloaded a version from a different site that's called Raspbmc that is setup as an HTPC and it is much better at playing videos and using the digital sound capability of the Raspberry Pi. The device is actually usable with Raspbmc on it.
 
I am curious as to what you would do with one of these. They seem so stripped down that they must have some very specialized application. It seems that they are for robotics or something, but would you really install an OS on them if they are for this kind of application? Please, owners, do tell :) Oh, and is there anywhere you can get them outside of the UK?

found a bunch on amazon.com of all different kinds, even though they seem highly under powered. The one I listed seems powerful enough to some stuff and what ever I get it will probably get a lego case built around it and I will hook it up to a monitor to be a desktop for judt fun to play with.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is a lego case? You would just use it for general computing then?

Can you use it for browsing the web? If it's this capable, than it's a pretty awesome machine, considering that browsing the web is the main activity online for most users. Can you make it run ubuntu or something? Having an that-good-looking os, it surely increase it's popularity.
 
The default image has 2-3 different browsers on it so yes, it can browse the web. The browsers are pretty simplistic though.

Yes you can browse the web with it and no you can't get Ubuntu on them yet, but Fedora can be installed on them. I'm going to put Fedora on mine and see if it runs any faster.

The case I will build around it will be made of legos :)

I have read about some people getting chromium OS on them so I might try that.
 
I can't wait for mine to arrive, I've been following them for I believe two years now, I even came up with their slogan, take a byte. I still haven't decided what I'm going to do with it but I think I should be able to put it to good use :D

Nice! And Chromium is a good idea.

I have also been reading that one installs the OS on an SD drive. Is this the same thing as installing it on a hard drive? Also, you can buy them with it pre-installed. I would get one of these, but I need a convince myself I have a use for it :P
 
Yes, the OS installs on an SD card (not included). You can buy SD cards pre-imaged but it is a fairly simple procedure to download and write the image to an SD card you provide.

I think chromium is the best bet, from what I am reading on the blog he is almost done building chromium for raspberry pi and I honestly think it is the best option being that it is super light weight.
