Hey guys....I was looking why are oem drives so much cheaper than going with retail packs......and to be honest? are they worth the S***?

it depends on what you buying. In my opioun it ok to buy oem in just about anything except I would not buy a oem motherboard.

reality

so in all reality you would buy a oem harddrive? SO the only difference between those and the retail ones are that they don't come with driver cd's and such?

God, every component of my, pc is oem, including windows XP. the only retail kit in it is the memory, but the saving wasn't worth the money at the time. :P

i have always heard to stay away from them

I'd stay away from refurbished stuff, but an OEM in a sealed static bag and with warranty is just the same as retail (minus the drivers, cables, packaging of course)

How

Just out of pure curiosity what makes it OEM I mean I know it doesn't come with drivers and such but How did it become "OEM" in the first place?

They dont "become" OEM. They start as OEM. When you ADD useless crap to it like manuals, cords, cds, then you get retail.

just know what you're buying, if you're getting one from a friend as i did, make sure you know what he's done with it. and if you're getting one of ebay check what they say about it's history in the description.

pricewatch and new egg

i am going through these 2 places trying to get them.....I am trying to get 2 of the largest possible or close to it for around 140 bucks :P

Lol

Ok Final Clarification :). An Oem Product Is A Product Without The Fuss Around It. So As Has Been Mentioned Before It Usually Has No Drivers Or Cables With It. You Do However Still Have Warranty With It And Oem Does Not Mean Refurbished, returned, fixed Or Anything. It's A Version Of The Product Without The Expensive Packaging And Other Things That You Can Download From The Manufacturer's Website Anyway. So Oem = Goood Stufff For The Smarter Customer....the Average Customer Buys Based On Packaging And Presentation (features As Well). Buy The Oem Version Instead.

OEM = original equipment manufacturer. You get OEMs when you buy Dell, Compaq etc. Just watch out for people who sell something as an OEM while in reality its refurbished.

Mainly buying from trusted places (ie Newegg etc). If you find something that seems too good to be true it probably is. I usually spend a couple bucks more to buy things from places that won't try to rip me off (at least too much) and have decent customer service if I feel I'm getting screwed. As far as telling if what you recieve is OEM, I know my OEM hard drives have come in a sealed static bag but I don't know if thats a standard. I think my optical drives just come in some thicker plastic thats taped.

thanks

I think I will go the oem route..........Do I necessarily need a cd or driver if I am just getting a oem harddrive?
