Apple Discontinues Computer Sales?

I don't know if this is true or a rumor, but I heard that Apple isn't going to manufacture computers in the future. Is this true or just a rumor??

um yeah right Apple is far from stopping to sell computers. The organization I work for just bought 6,000 macbooks and 20 Xserves, as well as several hundred iMacs. We aren't the only educational organization to go to a 1:1 apple laptop student ratio either, there are plenty. Almost all local businesses are slowly switching to a 50% PC 50% mac environment, they are gaining all kinds of market share. I can only assume that same trend is also happening all over the place.

Now, Apple may drop the word "computer" from their company name because they are no longer just a computer company. They are a computer, ipod, iphone, iTv, software, multi media company now. I think that is where you may have heard such a rumor. They could change their name to Apple Technologies or whatever, or just Apple, or Macintosh, or who cares really.

Trust me they are not going to quit making computers anytime soon.

I disagree, MAC's are very fast and easy to use, no matter how incompatible... They're great stable computrs

Just because they aren't gaming computers, people get the wrong idea with MACs. I used them in middle school in a Video Production class (WAMS), and fell in love. If I weren't such an avid gamer, I'd lay my hands on a MAC. Speaking of which, if I did get a laptop, it'd be a MAC, because laptops under $1000 are pretty crap for games, so I'd use it primarily for video editing and all that other stuff MACs are good for.

looking around for related articles, the only new thing i've found so far was an article from november 28th stating that apple might discontinue the AppleTV

and around june they discontinued apple brand CDs

I lived with them for 2 years in Elementary... good stuff. Could even play Runescape back then :P Laggy, but still...

If they only made a MAC that could support PC games... ah...

Untrue, buuut.. there is a rumor going around that leopard is making that leap. There's an article at arstechnica that states that the leopard program loader has certain windows support, such as searching for windows dll files when launching an application. They're skeptical of it all but aren't ignorant enough to completely rule out a "secret" project behind leopard.

Here it is

I doubt it.
But it would be awesome because they then might let you install Mac OS on PC builds...not just store bought macs. Or do you mean back out of the computer business completely? That would suck. I love macs. Where did you hear this?

Well Bootcamp allows you to run Windows on a Mac, but IMO that would be a waste.
I think it would be sick if you could run OS on PC. I would definitely dual boot that and vista.

Seems like I heard a rumor last year that Apple was going to contract out to Dell to make there computers, which I dont think will ever happen. But never heard they were going to stop making computers.

The schools that I am interning at have iBook's for all the teachers, and all the old desktop PC's are being switched with Mac Mini's.

Yeah, I would agree that Apple is quitting with the Mini but, I have also heard that there is a similar small computer to take its place, the Nano.
