I have family dropping off a school laptop and wants me to extract some personnel information off the hard drive. Apple said they will replace the laptop when she sends it back because of the number of repairs. the hd will only work for minutes at a time. I never had a Apple before and using quad core. Any options to get her files off?

I can network or take the drive out. i don't know what the format of the drive is. NTFS or maybe fat32. Any suggestions would be appreciated. i have a external usb drive i use. have pen drives for usb also. will any of it work?

thanks

OS X uses HFS+ as it's file system which windows doesn't have a driver for - however you can install a free utility to look at the data from windows. It's called HFSexplorer.

It can be found here. http://hem.bredband.net/catacombae/hfsx.html

EDIT: if it's the actual hard disk that's broken and it does not work for long then it could be the bearings and it may be worth putting it in the freezer for a while before plugging it in so as to squeeze a bit more time out of it.

No.........thats why i asked. mine are all quad and dual core. never had an apple. i would think i could copy to a micro drive. She's on her way now.

iBooks are a pain in the ass to pull the HD out and if you aren't versed on taking apart laptops I wouldn't recommend it. There is like 80 screws you gotta take out to get to the HD on those G4 iBooks.

You can try to target mode boot it into a PC, not sure how that would work as I have never tried it.

You would still need an application to read HFS+ file systems though.

ive tried everything i can think of. im up on the laptop. ive tried micro drives, and sd card reader to copy to. will not recognize that either. any ideas why i can't use the card reader? SD
