Yeah js got this stuff today and followed the procedure like I was supposed to but when I look at my CPU temp it says 76C. Does it take time for the thermal paste to work? Should I leave my computer off, so I can let the paste settle in?
 
That's a really high temp, is it idle or load? What's your CPU? Are you using stock HSF? Did you put the right amount of AS5 on the CPU?

The thermal paste will settle in after about 200 hours of computer use, I think. I've read that it's good to put your CPU through several thermal cycles in order for it to settle the best way.
 
How much did you put on, you only need a small drop.

76C? That seems really high, what processor is it, and where are you getting the temperature from?
 
thats a very high temp even if it hasn't settled in, i would expect much better than that. i think you haven't put enough on or your heatsink isn't secured properly or you have a pocket of air under your heatsink.
i would remove your AS5, then reapply, making sure that you have the AS5 spread over the core of the GPU, if you have a heat spreader on your CPU then spread a thin layer over the entire heatspreader and make sure that the heatsink is on secure
 
yeah, small drop and then put the HSF on (don't spread the as5 around). What program are you using to read your temps? What's your MOBO, CPU, and Heatsink/fan?

Could just be the wrong reading in whatever program you're using, because they are not always accurate. in any case if your computer is running fine and doesn't shut off under max load then you know your temps aren't truly that high because it would over heat the CPU and your computer would just shut off.

I trust you're not overclocking until you figure out where you problem is...could be the mobo giving the program wrong reading or could be the program setup wrong reading the mobo settings...who knows, give us more information :)

I'm using a stock HSF and I js cleaned my HSF and CPU with rubbing alcohol and reapplied the AS5 and I'm still getting the same tempurature readings. 73C - 76C. Even when I leave my CPU at stock or at OC frequency its still the same tempurature. The only time my computer will crash and restart is when I'm playing DOD:S for a long time. I'm also using SpeedFan 4.28 to read my temps.
 
Wow, I'm really surprised that your CPU is running that hot, I have Socket 478 P4 at 2.4(in another computer) and it idles at 33°C. I think one of your only options right now is to get a new HSF. It's possible that your temp readings may be wrong because I don't think your CPU should get that hot. You do have good case ventilation, right?
 
Well it sits underneath my desk with one of the side vents open. I js reapplied some more so maybe it takes awhile for the thermal paste to settle in and start working...
 
yea it needs a good cleaning (with rubbing alcohol, isopropyl).
clean the processor and the heatsink where they contact. then, apply about a small amount of thermal compound (about the size of a grain of rice tops) and spread it around with your finger INSIDE A PLASTIC BAG. natural oil from your fingers contaminates the surface... yes its that sensitive.
the break in period of thermal paste is about 200hrs and settles everytime you let it cool to room temp... but the difference is maybe 2-3C not the results you're looking for from 76C

EDIT: when you clean the surfaces with isopropyl (rubbing alcohol) make sure you use a lint free cloth, such as a coffee filter or some cotton swabs... do not use paper towels, or regular towels!
 
Okay I found out that I was reading the wrong temperature from Speedfan after I configured everything... It turns that my Northbridge was the one that was heating up and not the processor. I think the Northbridge is starting to cause some problems because when it gets too hot my computer just crashes and restarts. Should I apply AS5 to the HSF?

yes, i followed all the procedures on the web, but are they important?
i could not find an imformation that i was not aware of;;
well, mostly i mean.

i use "probe" from asus to check my temps
 
Well if you want AS5 to work properly you probably should follow the steps correctly. I used rubbing alcohol with a lint free clothe to clean my HSF and CPU and squeezed about a size of a uncooked rice in the middle of the CPU. You shouldnt used anything else other then rubbing alcohol b/c other cleaning agents like Windex contain oil (which doesnt evaporate) will get into the microscopic holes and reduce the effectiveness of the paste. If also have a thermal pad underneath the HSF you should scrape that off.
 
i had the same problem, everyones telling me i need thermal paste, so i go out and buy some put how much it said to put on spread it, then it raised the temp, it used to avg 90f now it avgs 100f
