or the bigger the chip, the bigger the fan?

have 1.86 ghz now

swapping to 3.0ghz....

do i need oem 3.0GHz cpu/fan combo, or can i use my 1.86 cpu fan and just get 3.0GHz chip?

or get 3.0 cpu and get a better fan?

thanks, any input appreciated

The fan size is according to the Socket type, not the Ghz of the CPU.

Your fan would still work on your new chip, however it would always
be recommended to buy an aftermarket cooler. They're much more
efficient.

Well first of all, Microsoft doesn't make processors. They're a software developer, but I digress and am nit-picking. The cooler that you have should be fine, but if you're buying a new processor, it will come with a new fan/heatsink anyway, and it is obviously better to use the new one in this case.

true. buy a cpu with cooler included, will be better than the one you have. but the one you have will do fine if it doesnt come with a new one. or buy an aftermarket one.
Zalman, DeepCool or CoolerMaster is probably the way to go.

chips like 150.00 on amazon. cpu, heat sink, fan are 275.00.

but when i asked how much for just chip, told 225.00

buy set from microsoft for 275.00 thats all oem,

or

buy cpu, get aftermarket fan? not sure about heat sink....

advice appreciated, thanks

If I was you I would pay the extra $50 to get the Microsoft heat sink and fan. Microsoft makes great heat sinks and fans, and you'd be a lot safer buying theirs than getting an aftermarket set from someone like Kawasaki or Hasbro. And whatever you do, don't by from Cyberdine, their fans/heatsinks are absolute rubbish. They recently had to recall a bunch of fans because they shipped them with faulty flux capacitors.

Just now realized the sarcasm in that. To the OP- why are you buying cpu off amazon, try zipzoomfly/newegg/tigerdirect.

makes sense, theres so many choices, types, models, ect.....

i found cpu for 132.00. either 132.00 for cpu :),
or

275.00 for box set cpu, fan, heat sink.

double the price! :(

suggestions now?

Go for the $275. Microsoft processors run a lot faster with Microsoft heatsinks and fans. You won't get the same performance from an aftermarket cooler, it will run a lot slower due to thermal compatibility issues.

What kind of cpu are you looking at?

3GHz Intel Core 2 DUO E6850 1333MHz 4MB LGA775 BX80557E6850

guy said he'd sell me the fan and heat sink from this package for 50.00, and i get cpu for 132.00 from different place? or get whole package for 275.00?

im confused. he's charging 225.00 for cpu, but found for 132.00 on another site.

im confused......thanks for the input
