Are Intel motherboards any good?

They aren't that rare. They are designed for stability so there's no overclocking options or other fancy features on them. Unless you want the OC options or like bells and whistles they are good.

Intel never really got deep into the mobo business after the 440BX back in the day ... nothing wrong with the boards by any means though .... as things are now ... any BTX boards should probably only be available via Intel

The 440BX was one of the best intel boards in my opinion. Was very stable for what you wanted to do and had the capacity for quad CPU setup. Not very fast though compared to today's boards.

Intel has amazing boards for their cpu's, if you want to overclock look somewhere else, but if you want stability pick up an intel board, the newer s478, and s775 boards are very stable and there is nothing wrong with getting one. Also they have there BIOS updating down to a science, its flawless.
