Hi,

I was tinkering with my IDE hard drive and pried the jumper out because it was in the slave mode, and it went flying across the room and I lost it..

I found this jumper lying around in my Ziplock bag of extra parts for computers, could I use it?

yup. For most HDDs they are the same. There are a few exceptions, but a visual inspection will quickly tell you.

By the way, just for your own knowledge base, it's not a jumper, it's a shunt.

who would want too use the word "shunt" baha Jumper sounds better. Yes will work perfectly Fine.

A jumper is simply a peice of metal with some plastic around it(so it won't short other things out) Anything that would short the two pins required for the settings would work just fine. The only problem with jumpers is that some are different sizes. But as long as you can get the connection going, any would work :P

it's jumper, if you start calling it shunt you'll be going against the extreme vast popular opinion (and manufacturers specs)

Also called bypass. Electricity. a conducting element bridged across a circuit or a portion of a circuit, establishing a current path auxiliary to the main circuit, as a resistor placed across the terminals of an ammeter for increasing the range of the device.

hehehe. ;)
SirKenin, I dont care if you want to go around being pedantic.
There are 100 terms that could be applied to the function you are descibing, bridge, cross-switch, connector, bypass, shunt, jumper etc.....
I dont care how many terms you can think of or how many defination you can find. In computing the term is called jumper, simple as. Why do you feel that everyone else is wrong and you are right. Its been arbitrarily choosen as the offical term...period
