are laptop coolers really effective in bringing down the laptop temp or is it just some marketing gimmick

Well, considering a fan on mine sucks air away from the laptop's fan, it kind of makes my laptop worse. I think it works pretty well until the fan finally does kick in...

Yes, it does work pretty well, I have the Antec LapCool and it does make my laptop stays cool(always below 29 degree C) all the time, compare to the old days without this lapCool, it can stay up to 49 degree C(I know it's a bit hotter than usual as my laptop is a 8.9 inch small JVC MiniNote which the whole case is build of metal).

Mine is a targus one and it lowered my temps about 10º or so after i put it on there so it helped me out and i just leave it on under my laptop all the time when i'm home
