are p2p programs illegal?

i know that limewire is a p2p and it's not illegal. but arent torrents also p2p? i heard somewhere that torrents are illegal. can i get caught or sued of using a torrent? thanks
 
the whole entirity of P2P and torrent networks is perfectly legal, and by using them you are not breaking any internationall laws. The problem arises when you start to download copyrighted material... anything that is not your own or anythign that you do not have ex[pressed permisssion to download/use/distribute.... thats pretty much everything on torrent networks, but on P2P networks such as the gnutella network for limewire, you could upload your own bands free tracks for download, that is LEGAL, if you go off downloading the latest singles form your favortie band, thats ILLEGAL

basically, it all depends on what you downlaod, the networks and client applications are perfectly legal by themsleves.

No, Bit Torrent clients are perfectly legal but, what you download makes it illegal.

For say: If you download copyrighted files from torrents or any other P2P clients it is illegal. (Unless owners want you to, EX: Anarchy Online.)

you just contradicted yourself? ok so i get that limewire is safe. but i still dont get about the torrents. isnt a torrent and limewire practically the same thing? you get files from another person. anyways, i want to use this torrent called bittornado or something.
 
No i dont see a contradiction. He's saying that if you download copyrighted material then its illegal, if you download non-copyrighted material then its perfectly legal.
 
arent all musics you d/l considered copywrited, since someone first had to actually buy the cd, and post it online? and then everyone gets it form that person? i used to think that it was only illegal if they sold it to you, and they made money. isn't it just like burnin a disc for a friend?

No. Harvey Danger made one of there CD's for free, perfectly legal to torrent it, put it online, download. It's actually a good move, free publicity and all, they encourage you to download it.

However most artists don't do this. So yes, most music on torrent networks is put on there illegally. You just have to be careful what you download.
