Is there a significant amount of performace boost of these HD's over a regular 7200 rpm HD to justify getting ,obviously for heavy gaming ? Can you really tell a difference ?

as far as fps no one at all
as far as load times and boot times you will see very little difference

for data throughput you bet. If you are ripping/encoding very large audio/video files you will notice a huge difference. In gaming, not any difference at all, maybe some faster loading times but that is it, and even that is subjective.

It all depends on what you want to do with your computer.
