I'm new to hardware and just need to know if these parts are compatible with a stocked HP a6700f:

EVGA GeForce GT 640

Intel Pentium G860

All the HP A6700f I see are a AMD Phenom X4, not a Intel G860. It claims it has a X16 slot. Pop the side open and make sure there is room for the card. Not for sure about the power supply. From what I can tell it has a OEM 300W, which probably means it has around 225W on the 12V rail. See if you can get info off the power supply.

I mean I'm going to replace the stocked parts with the two I mentioned.

Well your looking at a Motherboard/Processor/it just has DDR2 memory, so a memory upgrade too. Then possible a power supply upgrade too, its just a old OEM 300W power supply.

If I were you, I would just buy all new parts and build the system yourself. You have an out of date HP system and its easier to just build a new system then trying to put new hardware into the HP case. The case connections usually don't match up to the motherboard very well.

What would you recommend for a 600-700$ build?

Get windows 8 over W7 at least. For $900 you could do a lot better then johnb35's build.
i5 3570K
Gigabyte UD3H Z77
MSI HD 7870
G.Skill Ripjaws 2 x 4 GB 1600 MHz
Windows 8 64 bit oem
Corsair CX 500
Seagate Barracuda 1 TB (get this even with johnb's build if you get it)
NZXT Source 210
This build is a lot better then johnb35's build, but for $200 more.

I was only going off of his original budget amount. And if you look at the last sentence in my last post, I said if he was willing to spend the 900 then we can definitely get him better parts. But again, it all depends on the games he plays.

If $900 budget then we can definately get better parts. but all depends on what you want to do.

What was the point in these statements of (better then john build over and over) when he said the same thing about a 900 buck build?.

If you want to be able to play next generation games, then you will need a good video card and processor. So if you can really do the $900 then yes thats what you need to do.

I guess I'll go for 900$, but dang, 730$ build can't even run next-gen? How does PS4 manage when it's probably only going to be like 450-500$?
