Are You Afraid Of Linux? Zenwalk!

I'm still trying to get Zenwalker running here. Every burn to disk with that one and Zenlive sees a "missing operating system" error when booted from. More then one copy of each was downloaded to insure iso integrity. On a Linux forum I visit on occasion another "newbie" was able to get Zenwalker running by first installing Lilo.

Gag offered a different approach I will trying shortly since the boot floppy was made up several hours ago. That will load "any" operating system according to the information on that. It also uses what looks like icons you ismply click on to load the OS of choice for that session. I will now be looking for a tool to extract files from iso images to see if that works. The screens on Zenwalker look great. It's just finding a way to get it installed.
 
I'm installing Zenwalk in VMware Server now.
I'm running directly from the ISO file.
Does the computer you are running off of have old BIOS that don't support booting from CDs?
 
I have my linux Ubuntu cd given to me, my friend said he had 100 of this cd mailed to him from linux. are there good programs you can install in this? games and stuffs?

Every burn so far has been booted from already. That includes the Zenlive iso burn along with the Zenwalker. The same error comes up everytime. This is how it appears at post. Note the dashes are replacing the usual seen.

This should give you the idea there. Hopefully the last burn will see something different since another cd/dvd burning freeware was installed.

UPDATE: A much welcomed relief came about when someone recommended BurnOn for cd/dvd burning. The try at Zenlive saw a fully working copy of the live distro there. Do not that Zenlive can not be installed to the drive like ubuntu and other live distros. This was the information explained by one of the developers. BurnOn's home page is seen at http://www.burnworld.com/burnoncddvd/ It's also free like Linux!

Did you get Lilo installed? For some reason it won't go on here. With the installer working for the first time the option to install lilo failed leaving Gag useless except to load XP on the primary drive. I downloaded another copy and reburned Zenwalk to try again after wiping the current installation.

Hopefully Lilo will go on with a new install with a good working copy. There were several errors while things were being unpacked. So another link was used for another try. If Lilo doesn't go on this time Grub will be the next step. Zenlive sticks with the XFce desktop.
 
Whenever I go home, I should have 2 distro dvd's downloaded, and 3 other distro's downloaded (5 cd, 3 cd, and another 1 cd'r). :)

So...whenever I can find free time in between my 17 credit hours, 40 hours work, and classroom observations (not to mention girlfriend), I'll have fun.

Yeah, I think I have Lilo installed. I wasn't exactly presented with a choice, and whatever I have works.
But seeing that Zenwalk is based off of Slackware, it's probably Lilo. Slackware is pretty old, and I *think* GRUB is newer. I'm not really sure.

Maybe you should try to use a slower burning speed? I get a lot of inaccurate burns, and BurnOnCD/DVD likes to ignore errors and keep going. That rarely happens, but...
 
The default boot loader is Lilo there. Grub is far newer. I used that when running Fedora Core 4 on the last case before having to loan that drive out. I also lost all of the Linux freewares like parititioning tools, a few desktop programs, and Grub of all things. I have Zenwalk on now without Lilo. That does seem to leave room for Grub.

The main problem is making a floppy without a console to enter the needed bash commands there. I just downloaded the latest GNU Grub 0.93 and will refer to the online manual for this. If I have I can always wipe the current installation by booting with the GPart cd and recreate the needed partitions easy enough. That will be done if using Grub finds a bad install there.
 
Using Nero:

Go to Copy and Backup in Nero Startsmart
Click Burn Image To Disk
Select The .Iso File
Go to Data and click Bootable Data Disk.
 
That's something to pass along there for Nero users. For a pair of very useful utilities to prepare a Grub floppy you can download Grub4Dos and WinGrub at http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=104188

That was something unexpected since 2.8 saw some problems with the installer.

Im not afraid of linux,

Ive tried Ubuntu , Damn small linux & Suse.

But can never be bothred with linux as i prefer windows because ive always used windows since windows 95 :D

But yeah i used Ubuntu on my computer while i was waiting for my Xp pro to come.
 
You have probably seen better results there. The prior distro here was Fedora with a few "newbie" problems getting that one running. The 2.8 distro was just released several days before this latest version of Zenwalk. The one thing found with the installation is a need for a 2-3gb root partition otherwise the installer will report a lack of space. 3.0 offers some added backgrounds for the desktop over 2.8.

when i read this, i said "what, afraid of linux?" i dont get how you can be afraid of it. the first linux i ran was on a really old computer, and was off the cia website. it was...different.

Linux has it's own set of rules being based on UNIX and not MSDos there. Only reecently have hardware support sites offered drivers for Linux as well as Windows and MAC. Most are simply reluctant since they never ran anything biut a Windows machine to start off with. I started way back when you had to "write your own" programs manually with systems like...
