Artic Silver 5 questions for new heat sink/Fan

Hi everyon,

I bought artic silver thermal paste... I was wondering if I have to install it different than other thermal grease. I ordered a new heat sink/fan and Artic silver. I was planning on using some rubbing alcohol to take the old thermal grease off and then just add the artic silver on my I5. Anything I should know first?

Heres what I bought if it helps

and Thermal compound

I will be using all the same specs below also.

Thank you

Matt

Pretty much the same....small rice grain size amount and spread it around and make it even. I use a sandwich bag and then a razor blade but you can use a invalid credit card / library card etc. Unlike the Sunbeam/Xigmatek you have a flat surface so your fine.

Just make sure you scrub the heatsink BEFORE you apply it to get any glue etc off it....and scrub that CPU till no residue pops up (even small amount) anything can prevent proper contact so better to be safe.

Thanks for the input twist, I honestly am really confused. What do you use a sandwich bag for? to make sure the thermal grease does not leak out after you insert the Heat-sink on top of the CPU? Or did you mean use a sandwich bag to scrub the old thermal grease of the CPU . I was just going to use qtips and rubbing alcohol :)

Hey Sperate question, where would be the best place to add the 120 mm fan to this heatsink. I have never manually added a fan to a heatsink.

Thx again

Matt

I would place it so its pulling the hot air and is exiting out to the rear exhaust fan.

okay mx thanks a lot, Ive read back and forth... most people say blow toward the heatsink, but the air exiting shold be by one of my two exhaust fans . How will the fan attach to the heatsink, does it snapon? or do I screw it on? or bust out the solder gun :o

thanks so much for that picture! where did you come across that?
hey mx you seem to know your stuff, Am I going to have to remove my motherboard to install this heatsink or will I be able to just clip in from the top like you can with any stock intel heatsink fan.... For IE

o i just use my finger, or the cap of the thermal grease
Never use your bare finger...your finger has natural and unnatural oils on it and you clean the heatsink/chip for a reason to keep crap that wont help out :P

Am I going to have to remove my motherboard to install this heatsink
Yes...comes with a back plate and even if it had push pins its not recommended considering the size and weight...will warp your motherboard and possibly pop out one day and damage your GPU.

Moving thread to cooling section...

You should not spread thermal interface material with anything, as it will cause air pockets. Air pockets= no thermal conductivity for that area. Its best to place a small drop in the center of the cpu and let the pressure of the heatsink spread it.

Best method:

Rice grain sized amount and no spreading except from when you attach the HSF/waterblock/

i have used my finger for years with no ill effects...hell i used it on my h50 at least four times in the past year lol

and reference to the fan attaching to the heatsink itself, you simply attach the fan using some cheap looking wire attachments, but it does the trick, they include them and they fit on any 120mm fan...so should be ok there

Thanks everyone! its getting delivered today, might wait til the weekend to install it, In the meantime Ill do some research on Overclocking, ill check out the sticky thread, Hoping I can get to 3.2 ghz

You are quite severely hindering your heatsinks operation then, as 1) you are contaminating the thermal transfer medium with foreign oils from the surface of your skin, and 2) introducing the means for air pockets to form. For all intents and purposes, air is not thermally conductive(when compared to thermal interface materials that is) and will result in poorer cooling performance.

The instructions for that will show the same method we have described here.
