Artifacts with DX9.0c?

Well, lately my 6800 has been causing small artifacts in some of my games after a period of gameplay, and sometimes right off. But now, i started a game with DX and it had artifacts as soon as it started, and so i switched it to OpenGL and there wasnt a single artifact. Can anyone pin point my problem? I used to think it was a heat issue, but everytime i monitored the temps, they were normal. Im not sure what else it could be, but now im leaning towards a software issue......maybe drivers? Im using the latest 91.31 nvidia drivers........

It's not so much a problem with DX 9 as it is often the latest update that can see a list of problems. You could find that on older ATI cards as well when installing the latest Catalyst Control Center. You will probably have to go back one or two updates to that corrected since that is an older model. Don't panic there. Use the uninstaller and then try an older one. See if that takes care of it.

After the Cat 6.0 came out many had problems with the older ATI models where they simply used the uninstaller and went with drivers only. The Cat 5.11 was the last there with the Control Panel alternative. After a period of time the updates are past many models that will soon be discontinued. That's the one problem seen when hardwares see too many fast turnovers for something new. The older models soon get lost in the shuffle then.

Only he's got an nvidia card...

Yes? That doesn't mean an older model NVidia card doesn't get bumped either. Another problem often seen is downloading a beta set for a newer model card like the 7900 GT. They are suitable for the newer cards while being a problem for the older ones. When ATI's tech support was emailed on the ATI Radeon 9600 in an older case someone inquired about on an update causing problems there. The response was to go back and download a Cat 5.4 when the 5.12 saw major problems. Likewise NVidia also get outdated and refuse to work properly after a certain point.

Yep, it was the drivers. Installed the ones it came with (77.79) and work great with no artifacts. Thanks.

Gee.....i remember not too long ago, the 81.98 drivers were beta and i think it was the 78 or 79 or somethin like that was the latest.......

This will happen often where you can only update the drivers on any model card for so long before you see problems come up. Although you see updates cover a range of models the older ones go so far and then run into things when running programs. Then you have to locate the newest that will run good with the card and save those to a folder on the drive or removable media.

If you know the 81,98 sees this then you go back to the 78, 79, or maybe as far as a 80. ??? and stop there. Once I have a ton of updates for hardwares and other things like utility programs like antivirus, system tools, benchmark, etc. I periodically burn a data dvd in the event the hard drive crashes or needs a reformat for some reason. At the same time you can have a main folder with several subs for each type. They are right on the drive if and when needed. If you have a spare drive, SATA array, or storage partition that's a good place to store these items as well.
