? as to whether I purchased a reconditioned laptop

I purchased a Toshiba laptop less than two months ago and went to defrag it the other day and discovered that it had a defrag history. The history said that the last time it was defragged was in May of 2008. I could understand that if this computer was produced and loaded w/software in May of 2008, that they may have defragged at that time and the computer just sat on the self waiting to be purchased. However, the additional history on defrag screen went back to 2005. So what gives?? To me that says I bought a reconditioned computer w/out it being respresented as such. I have been having log-on problems from the get go and if it is a reconditioned, then I can see this as being the cause. Am I wrong??

I don't see any connection/relationship between defrag and log-on problem. Whether your laptop was old or new, it might not need to be defrag. From your disk defragmenter, click on analyze and see if if your machine needs to be defrag.

When you save a file to your HD, this file is not save in just 1 area of the HD. This file is being splitted and and save to whichever space is available in you HD. Files becomes defragmented if you keep on saving and deleting, of which you cannot really avoid - hence the disk defragmenter.

As to your log-in problem, there could be a lot of reasons for that. We might be able to help you more if you could provide more specifics to this..

Hey mate, You're pretty new and welcome to the forums. I hate to nag, but it just seems as if you havnt read the guy's post. Or rather, even the title. You see, its your second paragraph that erks me. He doesnt ask "what is a defrag" or "whats the point of defrag". We dont need another PC-EYE here quoting wikipedia to make his posts look bigger.

The guy just wants to know if his pc could be refurbished.

To answer him, in all circumstances, I would say its a very good possibility. I seem to remember a way to check your registry for an install date, but dont quote me. Might try calling your manufacturer (assuming its still under warranty) and trading it in.

Where did you purchase this laptop from? On first boot, were you presented with setup and registration options?

Kobaj is right, it is possible you have a used machine. You can look at the date stamp on the registry keys. Keep in mind, however, that the computer's clock may not have been set correctly and you could see very old values (or even future values). It is also possible you are seeing the logs and software installs from the original factory setup - though usually, you will get the computer with a new drive image.

If you were told when you purchased the laptop it was new, or at least not told it was refurbished, take it back with the proof, and raise hell. You might even get a better system if you haggle.
