Assembly Mats (ESD Mats)

I've looked around for EDS Mats but haven't found any yet. How important are they when assembling computers, and where (National U.S. chains) can I find one?
 
lol, usually i build on the floor which is carpet, or in the tile little thing our fireplace sites on........really static isn't a huge huge deal, its just that if it happens it can really hurt your pc.
 
as long as part of you is touching the metal case of the computer, you dont need it. the antistatic wristband make that easier, but are not imporaint if you rember to keep a forearm or elbow on the case
 
I use one under my desk, but its for my chair bcuz' i dont like to roll around on the carpet. They shouldn't be more than $15-20 USD. I believe i got mine at OfficeMax for $15.
 
well.. it can ruin your system. however.. my old MSI K7T LE board lied on a carpet for 2 weeks, because it was broken. when my new mobo arriverd, i just swiched BIOS and the LE board was working again :)
