Assign Set Speeds

Can I give one computer on my network a set speed, and give the rest of the computers another set speed?

I am going to be running a gaming server, and when I am downloading or uploading, my internet goes to that task, and slows down the internet.

So, I'd like to assign a set amount to the server.

I am on an 8mb cable line, how much should I give the server to run smoothly.

Thanks.

You will have to install an bandwidth throttler on the machine you want to limit, that is unless you have a managed switch or a cisco router that supports bandwidth shaping features.

As for your gaming server you need to be mainly concerned with the upload speed as that is the important factor. What upload speed do you get with your ISP? Depending on how many players your server can host depends mainly on your upload speed. I remember years ago I used to host an unreal tournament server, i had 256k upload, I can support 4 or 5 players I think with pings of around 70 -150, any more players and the pings would spike and shoot up to 300 +

Edit: heres one: http://www.netlimiter.com/

Darn beat me to it...

@ #OP#, what is your upload speed? And what all do you plan on running...

My 864 Kbps is just enough for a 24-person TF2 server, which is never full  I am just getting mad at the server's CPU, I might upgrade it to a C2D, it supports it...:)
