Asus A8v Motherboard /CPU issue ?????

Hi guys,

I have come on the forum to try desperately to find the answer to a problem i have with my asus a8v m.b. I know it's fairly old, but I have an AMD Athlon 64 3000+ skt 939 CPU. The system was built by myself and worked perfectly until about 2 months ago, when .....

I went to turn the PC on and got an error message saying "system failed CPU test" over and over.

This is what I have done so far and the outcomes of each action:

1 Updated the BIOS when it was built in 2005 have not had any issues since

2 I replaced the CPU as I thought it may be fried. Still didn't fix it so ...

3 I thought it must be the heatsink, so I bought a stock AMD one and fitted it. The system worked for about 3 days and then same issue. I have tried varying thicknesses of thermal paste and it seems the more the better, which I know is not what you are supposed to do.

4 I have tested my power supply and I am getting all the correct voltages out.

5 I have even resorted to sanding a little off the plastic feet that locate the heatsink holder on to the m.b. the heatsink then clips to that. I thought this may give a better contact between the CPU and heatsink.

As you can see I have tried lots of things but is there anything I can do (other than resort to water cooling) to sort the error message out. It won't even turn the screen on when it comes up with the error.

Thanks in Advance

Have you tried resetting the bios or replacing the boards battery, How did you test the Power Supply. You will get that warning if the 12V rail is running to low to boot.

A multimeter is ok, but it doesnt put a load on the supply. Anybody got a supply you could just use to test it?

I might just buy one as I don't know anyone with one spare. What is really strange though is the computer sometimes boots up into windows or linux (i have a dual boot) and then when the desktop loads it starts to load the startup services and then restarts, as if the reset button were pressed.
