Asus Eee any thoughts?

Ive been looking at these a lot lately trying to decide if it would be worth it to buy one or not. Im getting rid of my old clunky Compaq and really just wanted something little to travel with me as a photo-editing/web site editing computer and this seems sort of ideal. I saw that I could install XP on it and use flash drives as memory, but would photoshop and expression web run on it without issue?

Any one have one or any thoughts on them?

I am also looking for some info on these. I hope you dont mind if i join in. I was hoping to buy one also and run xp on it. I saw one on ebay with xp and 2gb ram.

They should do just fine with photoshop, I could use photoshop with my old Fujitsu PII laptop. Since that thing was 266mhz and these are like 800mhz or something, it should do it just fine. I play around with the one in our store here quite a bit, they definately are neat.

I think they are awesome!
And with a price tag that small its well worth it for the things you want to do with it.
Even with the pre-loaded linux id say there good. As for colour, id go for blue ;)

I don't really plan on getting one at least any time soon but I love it none the less. I especially love the low price and these are changing the game, it seems like everyone has copycates in the making and it's just going to lower prices and push more technology for a good price

it's a good price tag for something so small. it's smaller than you think when you see it in person. when i type on mine, i always fat finger it since the keys are so small lol. it just takes to time to get use to the small keyboard and screen. to me, it's incredibly slow since i been using my OCed custom desktop for a while

Yes they are small, but you get used to typing on them pretty quick. I would not run XP on it, I would get the Linux version, it will run a lot better for you. These things are certainly not powerhouses, you have to think about the hardware. I'm not sure if they are changing this with the new EEE's, but they (the current one's) support 1GB of RAM out of the box; if you want to install 2GB RAM you need to install a modified kernel that can address the 2GB. The instructions to do this can be found on the EEE Forums.

For the money, highly portable, excellent for surfing and light to moderate use. I don't think I would go so far as to do much Photoshopping on one, though I could be wrong.

So to those who mentioned leaving linux on it, I suppose If I did that I could always install the gimp right which would give me a little flexibility while I was out and about until I got back home to PS my images. I really need something for work though, Im sick of not having an image editor there when I go out on photoshoots. As far as memory is concerned, I just planned on buying a couple 8 gig USB thumb drives or SD cards for that matter and using those as my memory/transport device.

As far as web editing though, does linux support any *good* web editors? And for those who have used the EEE hows the battery life on them?

EDIT: Whats the difference between the surf model and the standard?

They are giving Asus EEE's to all pupils in secondary schools in Wales in September... I am one of these pupils (in my last year) and have had a look at them.

I would say that they are good if you just want a simple, not fantastic system. The EEE's specs are respectable, although they are nothing extravagent.

My biggest problem with them is their HD, although I suppose a passport/external HD could solve this problem. If you don't mind getting another small passport HD (or if you already have one)then by the sound of it, an EEE would be a good option for you.

oh and one more thing i forgot to mention is... yes the HD is very small. it's the newer solid state drives so they make no noise at all, a little bit faster, and generates to heat. mine has an 8gb SD card to store additional things. im planning on putting XP on the expansion card so i can dual boot if u wanted to. i wouldn't put photoshop on it because the processor is just too slow
