Trying to repair a laptop for a friend of mine. He was sure that the LCD screen was cracked but I'm having 2nd thoughts on that.

I replaced the LCD with a brand new one and the computer still has a black screen. There is no back light or anything. I can plug an HDMI cable into the laptop though and can get video on an external LCD monitor, but not from the laptop its self.

My friend said that this happened after he reformatted the HD.

This is an Asus GL522V gaming laptop

I was originally thinking power inverter for the LCD. But you mention after reformat which sounds like it could be driver related. Although you have a signal coming from the external. Can you try safe mode?

Or try a live CD of Ubuntu.

Since you're using external, did you perhaps forget to use the quick FN keys on the keyboard to enable the LCD?

A reformat of the hard drive won't cause this. Seeing nothing on the screen isn't a driver issue either. Either you have failing hardware or an issue with cable going to monitor.

so you really think it would be hardware related or the screen cable is bad? I mean the laptop is fairly new and it happened after he reformatted the laptop. Not right after but a few days after.
Just seems odd for something like that to happen

I mean if its not the cable, then im assuming the mobo would have to be replaced due to the video card being part of the mobo
