Asus is crap? Dumbfounded?

OK, so I just boxed up my second UL20A laptop... I received my first one almost a month ago I guess. Right out of the box I had difficulties getting it connected to any wireless network. I swapped the wifi cards and it worked fine, so it was an apparently hardware issue.

Sent it back... Tried a few other laptops, then ended up back with another UL20A..

I had the thing for right around two days and it was working quite well. Then as I type, the F key just falls off! I tried to snap it back into place but it simply will not stay.

I'm becoming so frustrated now. This laptop was almost exactly what I was looking for and it's failed 2/2 times! To make matters worse, it's Asus, a brand I always respected. I'm about to the point of purchasing another battery for my Dell and continuing to use that. At least that darn thing works :mad:
 
I'm actually very suprised. I've had my Asus laptop for about two years, and its never gone wrong. Not even once. Thats pretty Dissapointing from Asus.
 
I have heard of a couple people having some problems with asus netbooks, from daily use, but nothing like this. One reason why I don't like netbooks and the cheaper, lighter laptops is all companies seem to degrade quality to get the lower prices (granted in 3-4 ears that processor might not be enough to handle the web very well).

After a year, my computer still feels new - even the keyboard and touch pad ,and I never use a usb keyboard and rarely use a mouse (just for games). No problems at all except someone tripped over my power cord and broke it but asus kept me on hold for 2 minutes at the max (and I talked to someone in California) and as soon as they got it they had fixed (or replaced?) it in an hour. Because of all the snow fedex won't deliver it though :(

I'm not sure if this should be considered a netbook or not. It's a 12" with a Core 2 Duo (ULV but still :P) Over all it does feel high quality but yeah...

I considered contacting Asus but I'm just rather frustrated that two have already crapped out on me... I had my eyes on a Toshiba earlier; similar processor but single core but has bluetooth and hdmi. Maybe I'll give that one a shot.
 
I found a 13" Toshiba with essentially the same dual core CULV processor but with 2MB cache rather than 3MB and it doesn't support some of the virtualization stuff. Aside from that though, it's red and black, has HDMI, has bluetooth, and is supposed to last nearly 10 hours on battery. Perhaps it'll be the one :P

My mom's had a Toshiba for about 2 years and it's been great. My roommate had a Toshiba for about 3 years and it was great. My grandparents just got a Toshiba and it's been fine for the 6 months or so that they've had it... Sooo...we'll see
 
I received the Toshiba today and thus far I'm really liking it. The primary complaints I read were revolving around the keyboard, touchpad and speakers. I have no complaints regarding the keyboard. I like it much better than the one on the Asus. Mouse seemed very poor at first, but turns out the lags were all from the crummy software/drivers loaded. Uninstalled them and it's much better. And speakers, while quiet, actually sound better than those Altec Lansing ones on the Asus. Go figure...

That is one sweet looking laptop The_Other_One. How much did you pay for it?

I currently have both the Toshiba Satellite and Asus, accept they are different model then the one you got. Love both of them.

The Asus I have is UL30A, the design looks almost identical to UL20A. Sorry to hear about the problem you had with your UL20A. Might be a bad batch, no idea.

Both Toshiba and Asus are good brands. I would never buy any other brand of laptops.

EDIT: Love the red color by the way.

I really don't know what to say about the UL20's. I purchased them from two different companies (Amazon then J&R) about a month apart from each other. I did really like it, and it all seemed like a well made laptop, though I was never fond of that keyboard. Aside from the key flying off, some of the keys appeared to be uneven and rotated slightly. I just don't know... I won't completely avoid Asus yet, but that was quite a dent in their reputation for me...

Totally reasonable, Only reason I am like toshiba and Asus is because I own their laptops and they are holding up very well. If I were to have a toshiba for Asus do what the UL20s did, I would think twice before buying too.

Happy to see you found what your looking for. I am sure your new toshiba is worth every penny. ^^ Great laptop.
 
I think with everyone its about your luck with computers. I had bought a asus netbook and it ran good for about a month. Now it has so many problems, it's garbage. And I didn't even do anything out of the norm, watch videos download music from my zune pass and surf the internet. I have owned a few dell's in my time and they have always been good to me, lasting longer than care to keep them (2 to 4 years still working just end upgrading).
 
Hopefully the toshiba will last. My sister has a toshiba laptop that is 4 years old and the only problem with it is that although the left click always works, you don't hear it and can't feel it go down.
