Asus K8V-X Mobo - Power up funkiness

Just finished building a new PC with the following:

  • Asus K8V-X mobo
  • AMD Athlon 64 3200+ CPU
  • 512 MB DDR RAM (Kingston)
  • Asus 9250GE/TD/256
  • A couple of HDs that I salvaged (12 GB, 80 GB)
  • 350W PSU
  • and the X01 case with 2 case fans - 1 on the front and 1 on the side

Here's the funny part. When booting up, it gives the usual device run through list from the BIOS. Upon reaching the end of the list, you can hear the HDDs power down and the screen goes black - this lasts for 1 second at most. After that, the HDDs power up again and XP loads just fine.

Is this something to worry about? Apart from this quirk, everything else runs fine! Please advise.

yes...

...they're relatively stable. By this, I mean that the only fluctuation comes in the 12V reading which switches between 11.716 and 11.776 a bit. I don't think that means much, though.

11.71 is really low for a 12v line. what brand PSU is it? and what are other rails like?

It is? Im sitting at 11.3v here :P

Rule of thumb is you want within 5% of its rated voltage. Mine is 11.92v, and im still not happy. newer PSU's are much better lol. what's 5% of 12v?

That would put you at 11.4v ... 'course im not worried ... i got all my stuff crammed on two out of the three rails anyways heehee im just impressed they are stable as they are heehee

odd...i thought it was like 11.8v, o well. i guess if it boots and is stable it doesn't matter, but i like to keep them as close as possible.

Are you sure the drives are powering down? Grab a cold-cathode or something and put it in series with the HDD power connector to be sure. If it is then grab a new PSU otherwise you're ok :)

Asus K8v-x

After reading this I am having exactly the same thing happening to me. I have just fitted this motherboard new 400w PSU with a new AMD 64 3GHZ Processor & 512 MB ddr PC3200 400MHZ. Put my old IDE HDD's Primary and reformatted to avoid conflicts with 32 bit / 64 bit issues 120ghz. Then connected the120ghz primary & slave 40ghz to this the mobo and hey presto the drives seem as you say power down for a couple of secs and then it loads XP up fine . I disabled the SATA in the BIOS thinking this had something to do with this but it hasn't  Otherwise it seems to be absoutley fine. Is there a problem I would be grateful if you find a cure then post back to me or is it something that I have not quite rightly configured in the BIOS. Anyone else experienced this? Is this normal for this Asus mobo?

I'm having trouble understanding what your asking. I think you're saying your 120GB and 40GB drives don't power up, or do but then turn off. Does your computer beep when you turn it on?

What issues?

Never encountered anything like that before ASUS or otherwise
