Since September 1998, Dell has used non-industry-standard power supplies and non-standard motherboards. If you put an ASUS board into a Dell case and use a Dell PSU, you will FRY the mobo or power supply at the very least, possibly even starting a fire! The PSU connectors LOOK standard, but they are wired differently according to Dell standards.

Um... I've run a Dell motherboard using a standard ATX power supply and a standard motherboard using a Dell power supply. The motherboard was a PIII and the PSU I used was from a P4 dell.
 
I'm at a loss to explain that unless Dell's moved to industry standards since 2003. Putting "Dell non-standard power supplies" into Google pulls up a lot of places where it seems that this practice may have stopped around 2000, 2002, or 2003. That still leaves lots of Dells around that do have the proprietary PSU connectors.

I guess I have to amend my post to say that anyone needing to replace a PSU or motherboard from Dell really needs to research if standard components can be used as replacements, or if proprietary parts are needed.

I do apologize for any fear-mongering or misinformation. I was unaware that things had changed.
