Asus P5PL2 Voltage Maximum

Okay, so I bet a couple of you guys have already heard about how I'm overclocking a Pentium 4 520 for fun. I'm using an Asus P5PL2 mobo, the rev 1 version. It's a 2.8GHz Prescott CPU with an E0 stepping, and I bet I can get it to almost 4GHz, but my motherboard only lets my go up to 1.55v VCore. :( The stock is 1.425v. It's an old BIOS so do you think a BIOS update might extend the VCore range? Any thoughts are appreciated.

That's my first shot, and btw it's an AMI Bios. I won't be able to try it for a couple of days though, so in case it doesn't work, any other ideas?
 
you could try a pencil mod like i did. just google your motherboard model followed by pencil mod.

Seems like an option. I always thought that it was a permanent mod that would either help overclocking or brick your mobo. This thread taught me otherwise:

It's gonna be a bit tough trying to find the right resistor on my mobo, since virtually nobody who overclocks has my low-end P5PL2, but it still seems like a possible idea. Thanks again linkin! :)
 
try this, looks similar to the pencil mod for my board. i think the P5* series of boards from asus use the same "thingy"

just run about 10 strokes with a regular pencil across that transistor or whatever it is. the higlighted one.

Here's the one for my board, disregard the text, it's talking about a conductive pen which we don't want, you need some resistance :)

The actual voltage is always a bit more than the BIOS setting too, so if this mod works, I should be able to pull a constant 1.61v. :)

EDIT: Oh, and btw, the weird orange thing is strange but cool. :D
 
Just an update: BIOS update extended voltage maximum to 1.6v. I got it all the way from 2.8GHz to 3.8GHz @ 1.6v after changing my RAM timings. I haven't tried the Pencil Mod yet.

I think it might be. I raised my RAM latencies as high as they would go and still I get an immediate shutdown when Windows starts loading. The slightest load pushes it over the edge. I think I've pushed it as far as it can go with my current heatsink. :o I bet it would need at least 1.7v to stabilize it at 3.9GHz, which is my next goal. I'm not really going to bother submitting a SuperPi score at 3.8GHz, since raising my RAM timings resulted in roughly the same score. 3.8GHz also resulted in SATA not working. I think I'm gonna keep it at 3.7.... :D
