At my wits end with PC's!!!! power supplies..graphics cards!!! aargh

..But dont agree with the littlefella - i did as i was told/instructed etc etc and he didnt bother replying..end of.

Go back and read it. Your first report only related to CPU, not at all what I asked. Nothing of interest there. Then look at the second report, so don't talk rubbish.

And finally a new graphics card will do nothing to help this

..im not playing games on the machine, it is more about HD editing and making dvd covers with photos etc...just want to maximise the performance out of the processor i have.

Unless I'm mistaken, I haven't seen any posts regarding the state of your operating system,
when was the last time you backed up your data, reformatted the HD and reinstalled your OS?
Whilst on the topic of hard drives have you taken any consideration into replacing your main HD
with a SSD? You can use your HD for storage.

As for the power supply although I've never had any issues when installing an ATX PSU
into an ATX case it shouldn't matter if you have to install it upside down or any other direction.
I personally think your biggest concerns should lay with the brand and not so much with the power
for future reference. I've seen plenty of systems go pop because of a cheap 500w PSU.
The corsair mentioned in previous posts will be fine, they haven't let me down before.

Once again indebted to all the replies.

Will put this thread to bed now after one final question, which is..

this powersupply....will it work ok with my PC/motorboard etc...should i have any problems...simple case of unlatching the connectors of old power supply and sticking in this new one..AND...hopefully theres a connector with it which will allow me to plug in my new bluray player...

So, this be any good? Corsair CMPSU-600CXV2UK Builder Series 600W Power Supply -About £55

Just reading one review of it...apparently 'this is for NEWER MOTHERBOARDS AT A DIFFERENT AXT VERSION - all greek to me!! MISSING THE 4 PIN MOTORBOARD CONNECTOR USED TO POWER THE CPU .... my PC ( specs on page 1 ) is about 2 yrs old.

THANKS AGAIN for all replies and advice. Just want to get the RIGHT power supply now..600w is a bit much..but looking really at the MAKE of the power supply going by other recommendations etc

Yes the PSU you have chosen will be fine. Get the 430W or 500W variant of it if you want, it's the same unit, only with less wattage and it's cheaper.

I know...cheaper, lower wattage..fine...and sorry for sounding like a stuck record re this..simple of purchases...BUT...REVIEWS i read on the lower voltage say..well some of them...that it 'hisses'..and the 430w are not the best batch etc etc and then i read the 600w or whatever..well..it may not work with my motherboard!!...

I shalt plum for the 500 or so watt then..simples as that...again, i hope its easy to install..no problems..and will match up(sidedown) alright.

cheers Spirit.

SO...CORSAIR 500.....THE BUILDERS SERIES OR 'GAMING' ONE?

Regardless of price..an extra couple of squid...and although i dont do gaming...more HD editing ( and as previously mentioned more power for a second Hard drive and update of graphics card etc )

So..Corsair CP-9020005-UK GS500ATX High Performance Gaming 500W Power Supply

or Corsair CMPSU-500CXV2UK Builder Series CX500V2 - 80 Plus Certified Power Supply

I MEAN...whats the difference other than the gaming one has 1 great review, the other one has 'it makes a whirring sound' review...

Reviews will always be all over the place. I'd advise the Builder's Series. It's what I have and had zero problems in over a year. I heard some complaints about whine and other issues but I've never had any problems, it's quiet, and it works.

Just one final reminder, the changes the op is making will provide no improvement to video encoding performance.

just to mention the 5.9 is has high as you are going to get as transfer
rate- i think because of sata 2 mobo/and chipsets botttleneck- i cud be wrong

Why is that even relevant? It's a HDD bottleneck within the WEI. It's a totally useless benchmark anyway and should be disregarded.

I too would advise the Builder Series. Doesn't matter which one you go for, 430, 500 or 600, they'll all work with your board. Dad has a CX 430 and it is working absolutely fine.

on his original remarks he said everything was in the 7's with win.exp but asked why transfer rate was 5.9 i mentioned it becuz if he was doing this to get more than 5.9., i don't think he will. info only

Did he? Didn't see that. Never mind.

Well I plumbed for the;

Corsair CMPSU-600CXV2UK Builder Series 600W Power Supply for around 50quid.

So..my next question/s will be once ive received the thing and cant get it plugged in..however when that happens my computer will be down so naturally you'll be spared an assault of questions..

I have looked on youtube etc and basically...i take out the wires attached in my PC turning my PC off first etc etc...its ok to just unscrew the thing right - and take out current powersupply/wires and pop in this new one. Simples. Right. Cant..go..wrong....

thanks to you all for your help/ and yes quite right i did mention 5.9..a shame then that will not rise..but if i can just power two Harddrives with this new powersupply and get a new graphics card ill be happy.

Well, ive plumbed in my new 600w power supply, the 550 negeforce graphics card, another 4gb of ram ( so thats 8 altogether..the max i can have ), got my 2nd harddrive to work and bluray player.

So all tickity-boo. Thanks for you chaps advice.

Computer is v quiet too.

I STILL need to stick in a firewire port - for my older DV camcorder...happy to pay a little more..if it makes any difference? Advice welcome?

And Solid State drives...new to this...at the moment i am backing up all pics and hd video onto dvd ..just in case my SD cards should fail etc...but any more advice on SSDrives welcome...surely just a external harddrive arnt they..which could fail? No..yes?

Happy with my HD footage..plays back ok in my editing packages..does the job at least although havent burnt anything yet etc... BUT, watching clips on youtube...or graphics for logos etc..perhaps its the logo itself..i dunnon or the clips im watching...but def looks like a lot of jagy edges around some logos....Using photoshop etc all looks fine etc making my dvd covers..but just wondering....the ASUS GEFORCE 550TI....any updates other than on supplied card?

Final query chaps, i want to burn all my HD footage and a few thousand or so photos...i am using the best ones / editing the best HD footage to make my little films etc..no worries..but...just to be on the safe side, i want to copy pictures/hd footage..totally out of order etc doesnt matter...and copy it into a folder on my pc..then....i want to ideally...copy it all onto a bluray disc...again, to keep....do i need to download TOAST? NERO? ...any thoughts...copy/paste into folders..not harming the quality?

If you want my recommendation for an SSD I'd go for a Crucual M4, SanDisk Extreme, Samsung 830/840, Kingston Hyper-X or a Vertex 4. :) Owned the M4 and the Extreme personally and they're both great, should be getting my hands on an 830 soon for a build I'm doing.
