AT&T bad practice

Ok so I had to move, house fire kinda tourched my house, got the computers out even mine but the house was turned to rubble, thank god it started small and gave me enough time to get about 11,000 dollars worth of client PC's out lol.

But the new location we moved to, we transfered service, im paying for 6mb DSL service but our new location we are at 9,000 feet from the box, and according to ATT we are about as far as we can get so they speed capped me at 1.5mb when I called I was informed of this, ok I understand but here is where I don't

I pay 39.99 a month for 6mb internet, i signed a 2 year contract that contract is only 8 months old, when I asked if i could get downgraded to the 1.5mb plan there response was no your contract won't be up for anther year and 4 months. So I'm getting 19.99 DSL service when i pay for the 39.99 DSL service, and ATT refuses to lower my rates.

Anything I can do here, I run a PC shop outta my house, im not a lawyer and not sure what options I have because the supervisor will not assit.

They do this crap all the time unfortunately. I would just callback and ask for a supervisor. Rinse and repeat until you get someone who will listen. I work at a call center, and this is basically what you have to do. Luckily I work in insurance and not for the cable/phone tyrants.

oh there we go, i talked to someone else, I had an ATT truck out here today, yes Christmas Eve day, my DSL speed is now 5617kbs or 5.6mbs lol. They did line work and installed some sort of switch on the phone line on the pole about 3 house's down. I mentioned id call the media lol

and push i did, I wonder if this was a repeater they put on, not that i care

I can't think of the exact term but I think it might be a box used in large wimax communities. It takes packet requests from the "3 houses" down and prioritizes the requests and sends information accordingly. So you were the "end of the line" so to say but that box properly divided the connection.

I get so frustrated with service providers... I paid 65 a month for my business fios going to the house back in Riverside County, and I was only receiving 28/12 when it was supposed to be at around 35-45 / 20-25... Needless to say about 2 months of complaining got my yard dug up, a hole in my septic tank, and brand new 350ft of fiber. That grass was never the same.

Gone are the days of customer service.

EDIT:
On a side note, I am in school practicing law and hope to be a so-called "technology attorney" where I could possibly work with the FCC and patent infringement. AT&T Fixed your issue because they KNEW they could be in a legal bind. The proper term for it is Breach of Contract. Breach of Contract occurs where a binding agreement (such as your contract) is not honored by one or more of the parties towards the contract by non-performance or there is interference with another parties performance. (Basically, since AT&T subcontracts out their line labor [not too sure, but they probably do like verizon does] the line job could have been done poorly impeeding the performance of AT&T service. Or the engineering of the terminal of which you access is of poor construction and thus giving you a poor reception. It would make for a good case. Maybe they have fine print saying "what is advertised as top speed is only in optimal circumstances" and thus begins the legal battle on what should be allowed for a minimal speed at that data package.

*Whew take a breath after that one*

/end rant

They don't sell you a 6mb line they sell you UP TO a 6mb line if your located next to the box. Comcast does the same crap as I had their 24mbps line and only had 12mb so I canceled my service and went with Mediacom which actually give me close to the actual sell point (1mb off during high load).

They have legal loop holes that you wont get past.
