I am looking to build a cheap new computer for family member for surfing and e-mails. Is IDE an advantage? I know they seem to be about $10 more then ATA. Is it work it for this application?

IDE is a form of ATA. IDE is also knows as PATA.

SATA is better then IDE/PATA, the interface is much faster, smaller cables, etc. The reason IDE is more expensive for you is probably because IDE is being phased out and quantities are more limited.

Yupp. Just what Geoff said.

Both are good, Intel Core 2s are better than Athlons right now but you can get pretty good deals if you buy AMD.
No problem, just make sure your motherboard supports SATA before buying a SATA hard drive.
Every new motherboard should support it now.
