athlon 64 retail cooling

I am about to get a athlon 64 3000 w/ the venice core, and was planning on OC it by 200mhz to 2.0ghz. i was wondering if the retail version that comes w/ heatsink and fan allready is good enough for what i need? or should i get the oem and get a better aftermarket heatsink and fan? what kind of temps would i expect to run on it?

a) You can't predict how much you are going to oc by
b) your not really going to see any difference with a 200mhz overclock, except on bench marks
 
Yeah.

OC by 800Mhz and you will see a difference. Just make sure you get a mobo capable of 290 Core and you should hit 2.6 without any difficulties just like I have (Temp at 30 idle). I believe you can predict by how much you OC to a certain level if you know what components you use.

well... im not planning on OC... im getting temp reading of about 43c at idle and it goes up to about 54c which seems a lil hot compared to others... thats what my mobo is reporting anyways.. i dont know how accurate it is.

DVD shrink dominates on this thing! i encode movies so much faster compared to my old athlon 2000+
 
i doubt you'll need to raise your core voltage if you only plan to overclock by 200MHz, which will mean that your temps will change much at all
 
So, if i got this right, does the BIG temp changes only occur if you increase the voltage to CPU, and it only rises a little bit when you increase the FSB.......?

Really depends ... generally you will have to increase the Vcore before you can get a serious core overclock (since Athlon64s dont have a FSB) so they kinda go hand in hand.
 
But a 200mhz you prob wont notice a difference in temperature nor performance.

I believe you can predict by how much you OC to a certain level if you know what components you use.

To a certain limited level perhaps, and no doubt a 200mhz oc is something i feel comfortable saying 'can be predicted', but it best not to buy something with a minimum expectation for ocability (hey i just made up a word)
 
I don't think you should go oem either way (oc or not). Ive been told you generally dont have a decent warranty or any warranty on the oem, but you will on the retail version. The price being close, I would buy retail.

Someone correct me if Im wrong.

Hopefully someone else can tell you about how much you can oc before needing a better sink/fan. Or you could just do the experimenting for yourself...
 
i believe amd have an issue with using thermal compound like arctic silver; i think it voids the warrantee. Hence it being being better (warrantee wise) to have a retail unit cos they already have thermal compount supplied

Yes thats true about the Arctic silver .... but OCing also voids warranty ;)
