Athlon 64 too hot

I was recently given an AMD Athlon 64 3700+ (clawhammer core, CG revision). I have it running at stock settings on my Abit KV8 pro V1.1 mobo, i am a bit concerned about the idle temp; usually about 52 Degrees C (nudging 70 under load) with the internal case temp at about 33 degrees.

I have an asus star ice heatsink and fan, i also have the latest bios revision for my mobo as i heard there may be temp readout problems with this board.

Could any of you tell me a ballpark figure for the idle temps as these figures are giving me cause for concern.

Thanks :D

I believe i have read somewhere that Abit has problems with reading temperatures and that you should subtract 10-12 degrees off of what it says...I dont know for sure if your model is one of them, look it up, search google.

Where are you reading this temperature from? If you are getting these temperatures from a piece of software, then why don't you try looking in the BIOS. Probably more accurate their, and if it is still the same, it's probably the correct reading.

You could try re-doing the thermal paste procedure again, because alot of the times, this can be the problem.

ive also heard about the problems. ive searched everywhere for answers and cant find anything. ive checked the temps using uGuru and the bios and both temps match pretty evenly.

i used to have the stock AMD cooler which did run hotter; i managed to get up to about 73 degrees under load which is the main reason i changed to the star ice (and that it looked pretty lol :D )

What voltage are you running at? And whats the OPN for the CPU (its on the chip itself, have a look the next time you pop off the HSF)

im running stock voltage (1.5V) and i cant remember the OPN. Admittidly, the heatsink itself doesn't feel hot to the touch so im guessing its crappy bios programming :D

well, i put enough on so there was a tiny amount just showing on the edge when the heatsink was put in place... not so much that it was oozing out everywhere lol

it also ran hot with the AMD stock cooler and the pre-applied pad. I never had problems with the sempron 3100 and the stock cooler

Sounds like you put too much

well the problem seems to have been solved now i have a new mobo... its idling at 37 degress (with the stock cooler), a much nicer thought than idling at 52
