So I just upgraded my processsor from an Athlon 64 3500+ to the above mentioned CPU. With the Conroe about to be released I took advantge of the current sale on AMD's to get it for lass than 200 shipped.

I'm a bit new to computer building, having just put together my first unit (heck I'll admit to a general newbie-ness to computer issues in general).

So the thread is partly to brag and partyl to ask about the pre-applied "thermal pad" that somes on the AMD heatsink. Is it any good? will it suffce for a non-overclocker? My guess is yes, but I did buy some artic silver just in case. Unless it's an issue, I won't use it (in fact I already installed the CPU) to avoid voiding the warranty.

Current Specs:
AMD Athlon X2 4200+
2 gigs mwave (generic) RAM
ASUS A8N5X MOBO
Seagate 160 gig HDD
Geforce 7300 GS 512 mb Video car (weak, but I mostly play stategy games)
Lite-On and PLextor DVD drives

The stuff that came on the stock heatsink worked well for me. Temps were good enough for me to even do some medium overclocking. So, you may as well save your AS 5 for when/if you buy an after-market cooler (zalman/thermaltake etc).

The stock thermal pas is fine for most people. When you remove it and use something like Arctic Silver 5, your temps will lower a few degrees, but nothing extreme.
