Athlon 64 X2 4800 Vs Athlon 64 FX60

yeah the X2-4800 would probably work out as better value for money but the FX-60 would be the better chip, clocking at 2.6ghz against the X2's 2.4ghz

Which is the better of the two cards, the Athlon 64 X2 4800 or the Athlon 64 FX60?

1. They aren't cards, they are processors.

FX-60, its dual core too, unless im missing something obvious here

2. They are both dual cores, i dont really get what you saying with "its dual core too" because both are dual core

3. As stated above the FX-60 is better but more expensive. If you have the money then get the FX-60.

err im saying its dual core too, as in x2 is dual core and so is fx60

my initial interpretation of the question was based on the though that the poster might not realise that the FX-60 was a dual core. Mainly because the previous FX chips were single core and without actually researching the chip you may not realise the 60 was a dual :)

The FX-60 is 200Mhz faster, and has unlocked multipliers. Which means that it can be oc'd higher than a cpu such as the X2 series.

So the FX60 is better? Ok then, thanks for the info.

Also, how high can the FX60 be oc'd up to? And would you need anything specific to keep it stable?

actually the fx 60 is a hyper transport it isnt dual core
It has Hyper Transport in addition to the dual-core. But so do the Athlon X2's.

Its exactly the same as an X2 4800+, except it is 200Mhz faster, and you can raise the multiplier.

ohh k i was looking at the specs i couldnt see where it said it was dual core it was saying alot about hyper transport so i guesse i got a litle confused

yea that thing omega quoted was the dumbest thing ive ever heard. by the way, omega is right. its the same chip only guaranteed to run at 2.6ghz... even though a 4800+ may be able to hit that frequency if you're lucky.
personally, i'd wait.
i didn't think so before, because AM2 looked like the same thing only quad core would be introduced... turns out i was wrong.
rumors have it that reverse hyperthreading is being researched by AMD.
the theory is that two cores will show as one logical core, ultimately letting two cores work on a single thread... making it a better gaming proc... and will ultimately double its performance in all applications (that is, compared to single core athlon 64).
again, rumors... and theories. no solid facts shown yet.

Well, im asking for a friend who messed up his computer and needs one really soon. He wants the current best for hardcore gaming, but he's going to upgrade in about 3 years anyways, so the quad core thing doesn't interest him right now.

So as I was saying, how high can u overclock the FX60?

I've heard reports of people overclocking it to 3.8GHz, but it should be a great overclocker with its unlocked multipliers and a decent heatsink and fan like the Thermaltake Big Typhoon. An overclock to 3GHz or even 3.2GHz should be very easy with the FX-60.

what about the opteron 185? it's a 2.6ghz dual core proc about the same price as an fx-60.

As far as I know, he wants either the FX60 or the X2 4800, but i'll tell him about it.

Be aware that it is a great overclocking processor, but It's gaming power may not be that great since I think Opterons are server processors. Correct me if I'm wrong...

It's still not better than an FX-60.

fx 60 is the best cpu out there...
unless intel brings out a new cpu thats 1.5 times better than fx60
The Conroe will be better than the FX-60.
