Athlon 64 X2 6400+ vs. phenom 9500

Which is better? I may upgrade my motherboard so I can get a phenom. I don't want a C2D, as if I upgrade my board, I will be running my 4600+ for a while. My 8800GT could do better if I had a faster processor. So, what would you do (sticking with AMD products)? Just a 6400+, or quad core? Thanks!
 
You'll have to upgrade your board to use a phenom, your only option would be the X2 6400+.

If you upgrade your motherboard, you might as well go intel.
 
Nope that board has no Phenom CPU support, anyway as far as the 9500 the X2 6400 would be a better processor. Right now in my opinion the only Phenom worth buying are the B3 9750 or 9850.
 
Yeah, I already knew that the motherboard would have to go, which I'd rather not do, as long as the chipset isn't holding anything back, but that's another post.

I wouldn't imagine that a 6400+ would hold the 8800GT back, so I'll probably go with it. From what I've found, the board will support a 125w processor. What's the difference between a "Black" model and a non-black model, besides the black box, of course :P. Thanks everyone.
 
Thats not a good motherboard you have to be honest. If your upgrading, your best bet is to save a little more money and get something like a P-35 DS3L and a E2180/2220, or even a E8400..
 
If it was me, i wouldn't put expensive hardware on a cheap motherboard. If it goes, its possible to take them with it..

Black Edition is for overclockers (I believe), it comes with a completely unlocked multiplier (yea and let's not forget about the black box)
 
the phenom was a tremoundous flop. get a x2 and its better for gaming NEways

yeah they werent great but each core of a phenom is still 10-30% faster than a core of an Athlon X2 90nm, which the 6400 is.]

oh and dont forget that if you buy a black edition processor you must also buy an aftermarket heatsink, they do not come with one in the box.
 
Well if you're that bound on sticking to AMD... There's not much I can help you with, I don't have a great deal of knowledge with AMD's except that their Single-cores rock Intel's single cores. But seeing you're going for a dual or a quad... Go for an intel.

If you're getting a new mobo anyway, might as well take an XFX 680i LT (costs about as much as a proper AMD mobo) and a q6600 (wich won't cost more, or if it does slightly more) that will out perform any Phenom. And ofcourse SLI support.
 
I got the 5000 black & cooler, Gigabyte MA770 DS3, 2gb of Crucial 6400, and tested for just over 250 at mwave.

A E6750 will lose as much as win in benchmarks as the 6400+ will do in opposites (they both lose about half and win about half). Only the 6400+ is much more of a hothead.

You will also get a higher average fps with the E6750 according to Toms Hardware. And if you find a good shop they should cost roughly the same (E6750 just a bit more expensive, perhaps 10 or 15 dollar). But the extra it might cost is a good investment seeing the E6750 will do better in not only in fps with games but also when editing movies/pictures etc. Although in normal use you won't notice much difference... But who buys a E6750 or a 6400+ for normal use :| They didn't make Pentiums for nothing after all...
 
if i were you i would upgrade your motherboard to something with a 2600Mhz FSB. i cant say ALL bc im not sure, but MOST of them are phenom and x2 compatible. if you build an intel make it a seperate build on top of the box you already have. if you really want to go intel im sure you could get some bread for your 4600+ on ebay but AMD isnt bad at all. they definitely have more agreeable pricing-haha

Thats true only to a point. When these sites do a power consumption test its Processor vs. Processor. To be fair since the Athlon/Agena has a onboard memory controller and Hypertransport. The only real way to compare them is to combine the total of the CPU and Northbridge. In that I think Intel advantage would drop depending on the chipset. So theres to many variables just to make a open end statement.

From what I understand, different types of software are designed to run with certain types of hardware. So different hardware runs different types of software more efficiently.
