Athlon or Intel? More general advice.

I'm currently slowly buying up all the parts for my next machine. My question is, do i buy a motherboard with an Athlon or an Intel chipset? In other words, at comparable prices, which company offers the better CPU?

At the moment i'm looking at getting a Gigabyte AM2 nForce 400, but would probably opt for an Asustek S775 SiS 671FX if I decided to go with an Intel chipset.

and what sort of budget are we talking???
